Yep, this is the best option, just get your chosen 'qualified professional'
to tell you what they plan to do and how. Then check that against books,
surveyor, etc. It's very easy to slap some glass around and fair up with
car body filler.....

Almost certianly de-zincification of brass (pseudo-bronze) fittings. I guess
you could get a blank made in real bronze, but that would probably cost as much
as glassing the hole up.
