Because the damned yachties are buying them!

"Smart engine on board

The 3 cylinder Smart marine diesel engine finds since its first
conception in the autumn 2000 ever more trailer and uses.

The engine with the Common Rail system developed by Mercedes-Benz has
output of 30 KW / 40 HP with 3500 rpm. That max. torque amounts to
constantly 100 Nm in the speed range from 1700 to 2800 U/min. The
engine is in full aluminium building method with supercharger and
intercooler and has marinisated a weight of approx. 125 kg.

The marinisation is equipped with a titanium plate-type heat exchanger
and offers an optimum at corrosion resistance connected with highest
possible cooling reserve with maximum load.

Injecting curves and all for the engine management important data can
be adjusted with the help of our controller and a laptop individually
to the area of application.

A further advantage is the simple and fast fault tracing by means of
flashing codes.

Suitably the engine is particularly for sail yachts up to 12 m and is
alternatively with a conventional Hurth transmission or Sail drive
available."

Wow! I hope they build engines better than they translate German into
English.
