basic injection timing of the engine is controlled and adjusted by the
thickness of the gasket under the injection pump. The gasket can not be
replaced without going through the whole retiming process. I think this is
typical but I am not familiar with the Volvo. You probably could check the
tightness of the nuts and see if they will take up a little. If the timing
is adjusted by the gasket, it will be a precisly machined metal shim that
you can't overcompress.
