If there's a FAQ, I don't know about it.

For drilling a shaft alley, you might see Chapelle's "Wooden Boatbuilding."
I think he's the one that shows a drill with the looong bit guided at the
proper angle with a framework and with an assistant holding his palms on
either side of the deadwood to feel which side is closer to the bit.
Tricky.

Probably easier to build up the deadwood while leaving the alley open.
