You know, all the young people that I've met who are currently serving in
the military impress the bananas out of me. They are sharp, much better
educated and far more professional than the goofus'es that were in in my
time, (me included).
Even the Navy has continuous physical condition requirements that must be
met and I was reading some of the training and continuing education
requirements that they are required to participate in. Believe it or not,
some even include social graces type seminars, including reception line
protocol and foreign country tradition and relations programs. The only
"training" I got was what bars were off-limits.

So true. Some folks think the kids are joining because they aren't smart
enough or educated enough to do anything else. What horse pucky.
