My best to your son and my thanks to him for serving. Norfolk is indeed
a nice base. My brother in law was stationed there during his later
years (1980's) in the Navy as an aircraft carrier Commander.

You know, all the young people that I've met who are currently serving in
the military impress the bananas out of me. They are sharp, much better
educated and far more professional than the goofus'es that were in in my
time, (me included).

Even the Navy has continuous physical condition requirements that must be
met and I was reading some of the training and continuing education
requirements that they are required to participate in. Believe it or not,
some even include social graces type seminars, including reception line
protocol and foreign country tradition and relations programs. The only
"training" I got was what bars were off-limits.

My best friends sons are Marines, one currently in Iraq and one scheduled to
go back there after just returning from a 1 year tour there earlier this
year. Neither of them had any focus or goals in their lives prior to
enlisting, the older of the 2 wandering aimlessly through college, then
dropping out and going from menial job to job.

We saw both of them this year and the transformation is remarkable. Both
are now disciplined and have the eye of the Tiger, with clear goals,
aspirations and an image of self respect. I am certainly proud of both of
them. ;-)
