There's an interesting history of US Navy ships named "USS United States".
Although four ships originally had the name, the first and only one ever
launched became part of the confederate navy.

The second "USS United States" was cancelled and scrapped when it was 12
percent complete.

The third was to be an aircraft carrier, authorized for construction by
Harry S Truman. It's construction was canceled five days after the keel was
layed.

The forth, CVN-75 (the one my son serves on) was authorized for construction
as the "USS United States" in 1993 but the name was changed when it was
commissioned in 1998 to the "USS Harry S Truman".
