Tiller Lock

Basically you had a hole in the tiller that a pin dropped
into,
was very quick to pull out. I suppose you could make
something
similar using an adjustable telescoping pole.
I saw a cool deal on an old wooden boat one time...There was
a bronze plate on the deck under the tiller, maybe a foot
long, with 'teeth' sticking up. Then there was a small
bronze flange on the tiller that would slot into any of the
notches.
