More serious question:
If the starter is INSIDE the engine...and may have come apart in some
way...do you REALLY want to START the engine with starter crap floating
around inside the crankcase??!!

Saw this same type of Deutz starter arrangement on some 120KW air-cooled
Deutz diesel gensets that powered my cal lab in Tehran, Iran, back in the
late 70's. Running in a sea of oil, I can't imagine anyone ever wearing
one out...unlike the crap starters with no cooling or lube oil, hanging off
the side, starting the rest of the diesels at the marina. I think you're
very lucky, indeed, and worrying for nothing.
