David,
I live aboard a 41ft twin engine houseboat alone, here on the TN River,
and have done many locks up and down the TN River by myself. It's
quite easy, even for a 63 year old, single-handed!
Couple of things, I would recommend however; have your lines ready for
both sides of the boat, just in case you are asked to tie up on the
"other" side of the lock at the last minute, and don't shut down the
engines while in the lock, so you can use one to hold your stern
against the wall, when there are currents or wind gusts!
Of course, large fenders, fore and aft help kept the expensive parts of
the boat intact and scrach free.
I also have a 28ft single eng. cruiser, and it's just a little harder,
but still nothing that should keep you home alone! Just take it slow,
and easy, and you will love it! Don't forget to wear your life
preserver while locking thru.,
Not only a good idea but required!
If I can be of further help or info. you can contact me via email or
telephone.
