I'm no math whiz, (far from it), but wouldn't that formula simply
return you to
the weight shown on one of the scales originally?

It would if the tripod was symmetric. If something is off center a
little, then no.

My suggestion would be to get an 8 foot 4x4, prop one end on a 2x4, the
other end on the scale. note the reading. put the tongue 2 feet from
the 2x4 end. The scale will now read 1/4 the tongue weight. (don't
forget to subtract teh weight from before you put the tongue on)
