Thanks for the advice, got a call into boat country for a part. Both helm
seems too stiff havn't owned a command bridge and I'm told they are stiffer
than a single helm. All the other ones I'm used to (single helm) move
easily.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. There's no other way, replace
the cable.
Be careful when you stick the end in the outdrive (Volvo 280?) there's
a rubber boot that you can damage. I did. Then you get to replace that,
too.

cables aren't all that expensive. Just replace it.

the shift shoe tensioning bolt is shimmed wrong because its too stiff.
Maybe the cable is what's too stitf?
