Yeah, I race on Shenanagin. 3rd is better than nothing, but just to show you
how some folks think, "Jazzy" didn't send anyone to collect their 2nd place
flag. We were following the Contessa after we lost sight of Jazzy, we
thought we were going to beat them across, but we did take them overall. The
Little Harbor has a gimme rating for long-distance races. In our area PHRF
issues one rating, IIRC in other parts of the country you get a different
rating depending on the course and the boat. Something to think about, the
LH has a warterline length of over 40'! Last year we had a Tartan 4600 in
our division with the same rating as us and Jazzy, they won. The hole that
allowed us to catch "Jazzy" (they were over the horizon for part of the day)
also let the Little Harbor catch us and Jazzy up, the boats behind us had a
very small hole compared to us and especially "Jazzy", who definitely go the
worst of it. The winds were generally pretty decent except for the first
half hour at the start and the very end of the race. We didn't encounter
much in the way of holes otherwise.I'm going to guess that the average wind
speed was just north of 10 kts. One other thing, except for sail changes and
trimming, there wasn't much work to do, we didn't tack until the very end of
the race when we encountered the holes. In the last several hours we did
five sail changes!

Better than a sharp stick in the eye, our competition ran into a hole,
our
hole wasn't as big but it cost them more than it cost us. As close as 3
miles to the finish we thought they had us beat by miles, literally. We
ran
into another small hole about 500 ft. from the line, basically drifted
across.
I thought your raced on one of the J-33s? And the Little Harbor 52
corrected ahead? Usually boats like that don't do well in light air.
That Contessa 43 is a beauty.

The skipper was ambiguous about doing the race until I asked him to
measure
my boat for a PHRF rating certificate, I told him I was going to race in
the
singlehanded division this year. I got to give him grief today, I would
have
collected a 2nd place flag if I had done the race in the singlehanded
division.
Yeah, but would you really want to brag about beating a Pearson 365??
