Default Seamanship Question #11

Oz,

You don't explain how it is done. Someone who
hasn't done it would not be able to do it properly
bases on your explaination.

Based on your description, it doesn't sound like you
back up any distance, but simply spin it around.

There are two things you need to know to back up a
sloop for several boatlenghts off a mooring. Do you
know what they are?

Damn Bart, we do it all the time in the Etchells....back out from
between boats..gotta watch you don't catch the boom on the other guy,
spin her around and sail off without going near the tiller.
You just need to haul up the jib as soon as your bow is well clear.

What is the procedure for sailing backwards off a

Assume you have just slipped your mooring, there is no
current, and you have to sail backwards several boatlengths
to clear a crowded raft up. [Hint: There are two key facts
required to do this successfully]
