This article does a good job of highlighting some of the things that
make boating in South Florida unique:

Some good photography also.
Our friends on S/V Ring of Kerry decided to take a chance and leave
the Bahamas. They were able to obtain permission to dock
in Vero Beach, FL. and cleared customs electronically.
As they approached the Florida coast they saw two cruise ships
just drifting around, waiting for permission to dock somewhere.
Now is not the time to be on a cruise ship. We were lucky. We finished the
cruise and left New Orleans on 29 Feb, before it became a hot spot from Mardi
Gras.
I talked to my golfing buddy in Bradenton and they just got back from
a South American (Olympus) cruise. He said it was great but they would
not let them land in Peru and they couldn't fly home from Argentina as
they planned so the ship brought them back to Miami. Nobody on the
ship was sick but they still had to steam around in circles for 14
days before they could land. He bought a penthouse suite on the ship
so it wasn't horrible and they were not locked in their cabins.
