Default Lake Superior - Michipicoten Bay - needs your assistance

Please write to the Ontario Ministry of Environment before May 2,
2004.

The Province of Ontario has taken the first step toward designating
the proposed Superior Aggregates traprock quarry project for a full
environmental assessment by posting a proposal on the EBR
(Environmental Bill of Rights) Registry –
http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/envregistry/022505er.htm

The purpose of the posting is to solicit public input regarding MOE's
proposal to make a regulation designating the Superior Aggregates
proposed trap rock quarry under the Environmental Assessment Act and
which, if any, sections of the Act should apply.

We are asking all supporters new and old to write to the MOE once
again to voice your support of the MOE's proposal. It is critical
that you inform the Ministry now that you would like to see this
project designated for a full environmental assessment. Please ensure
to mention that you would like to see the entire property owned by
Superior Aggregates (approximately 380 hectares) so designated and
that the proposed quarry has a wide range of potential biophysical,
socio-economic and cultural impacts that will not be adequately
examined in other regulatory processes.

We are encouraging individuals to write original letters to the MOE.
However, if you do not have the time to compose an original letter, or
are looking for background information to include with your letter,
please have a consider using the sample form letter that has been
prepared (attached). Please note that your letter must arrive at the
MOE office by no later than May 3, 2004 at 5:00 pm to be considered.

Please direct your letter to the following MOE contact person:

Heather Brown, Project Officer
Environmental Assessment and Approvals Branch

Toronto, Ontario, M4V 1L5

Don't forget to include the EBR Registry Number in your
correspondence: RA04E0001

Additional background information about the traprock issue can be
viewed at the CCMB website: http://www.ccmb.ca/

Dear Ms. Brown:

EBR Environmental Registry Number RA04E0001

Please consider this letter as support for the proposal to designate,
under the Environmental Assessment Act, the Superior Aggregates
proposed trap rock quarry operation at Michipicoten Harbour on Lake
Superior, near Wawa, Ontario.

This large-scale industrial undertaking is in a critical section of
Ontario's Great Lakes Heritage Coast and is not a compatible activity
in the longest section of wilderness shoreline remaining on the Great
Lakes. Much of this wilderness shoreline has now been protected by a
National Park, three Provincial Parks and two provincial Conservation
Reserves and has the potential to become a world-class tourism
destination. The proposed quarry has a wide range of potential
biophysical, socio-economic and cultural impacts that will not be
adequately examined in other regulatory processes. Neither the Mining
Act nor the Aggregate Resources Act applies. And the undertaking is
extremely controversial in the local, provincial and international
communities.

Examples of some of these impacts include the negative economic impact
on the existing and potential eco-tourism industry; the cumulative
effect on developing the entire 380 hectares and 2.5 km of shoreline
owned by Superior Aggregates (the initial proposal is for only 10% of
the property); the impact on Ontario's caribou recovery strategy for
Lake Superior; and the negative impact of industrial noise in a
wilderness setting.

I believe that the proponent should be required to prepare an
individual Environmental Assessment that fully examines the purpose
and rationale of this undertaking, the alternatives to the undertaking
and alternative methods.

Thank you.
