Mariner 60E low speed problems

Hi everyone,

I'm completely new to outboards and to this group so forgive me if I type
rubbish!

I have just bought an old (80's) Plancraft Stingray speedboat with a Mariner
60E 2-stroke 2 cylinder outboard.

I went out in it last week with a friend who was in his RIB.

The engine was difficult to start - I tried all kinds of variations of choke
and throttle... it did start eventually but didn't want to idle and was
difficult to get into gear without the engine spluttering to a halt.

When opened up, it ran like a dream and once the engine was warm it was easy
to restart.

After stopping for an hour or so, it was difficult to start again and
"lumpy" at lower revs, stalling at idle.

I have a service manual but would like some ideas of where to start - if
there is a few simple things I can try before taking it to a professional
then I'd love to know!

I've bought new plugs and will fit them soon.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks to the both of you!

I will try changing the plugs and clean out the carbs today and let you know
the results!

Hi David, I've got an '83 60E and just had the same problems. Impossible

to
go from F to R without stalling, lumpy idle when warm, runs great at

higher
rpm, finally resulted in total non starter. Compression, spark, and fuel

to
carbs all checked out. A mate who's a motorbike mech, stripped and

cleaned
both carbs (full of s**t, the carbs, not my mate!!). Runs like it's

brand
new now.
Hope this helps.

Gordon
