![]() You should seriously look at folding kayaks like Folbot (www.folbot.com), Klepper and some others. Look at using the double with a single seat setup. These folding boats can easily carry 300 pounds of stuff. They paddle well and have been sailed around the cape, accross the Atlantic and countless expeditions. The Folbot double is about 60 lbs, you can carry wheels to help portages if you want, some fold very small. And you can break them down if you want to portage that way. They sail well and some have rowing options as well as the usual kayak paddling position. People have slept in them in a pinch. For your stated needs you couldn't better describe the strong points of folding kayaks. Check out "The Complete Folding Kayaker" by Ralph Diaz. I'm not so much interested in manufactured name brand boats as I am in TYPES of boats suitable for this use. The following criteria should be used. 1. Light enough for one person to portage over land and car top.80lbs 2. Able to carry enough food and water and gear for one week. I'm guessing 300 lb capacity including person. 3. Able to allow the user to lie down and sleep in the boat if necessary. 4. Able to be paddled by one person, rowed or sailed. 5. Able to withstand large wakes from commercial vessels and pleasure motor boats. -- delete "X" for correct email address |
