Sponsored by Miss Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the ship's namesake. Commissioned at Newport News, VA, Saturday, September 7, 1968. Initially classified as an "Attack Aircraft Carrier" and designated CVA-67. Reclassified as a "Multi-purpose Aircraft Carrier" and redesignated CV-67 December 1, 1974, upon modification to operate ASW aircraft. Decommissioned at Mayport, FL, Friday, March 23, 2007. Fate: Ex-John F. Kennedy left Mayport under tow for Norfolk on July 26, 2007. She will stay there until the end of hurricane season before being moved to the Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility in Philadelphia, PA for a two-year stay. John F.
