This is one of the Dutch "Boomkorkotters" No idea how to translate it in English, but basically it's a fishing vessel, which uses a technique were the nets are dragged over the bottom using a weighted boom. During the eighties these ships developed into quite massive ships with a lot of horsepower to drag increasing net sizes. However nowadays with the rising prices for gasoil and (supposedly) depleting fish supplies in the Northsea, most of these vessels have been replaced by smaller boats and/or other fishing techniques. As these vessels were really seaworthy they have been converted to guard vessels for oil and gasrigs on the Northsea and have even been used acros the globe for fishing. The enlgish wiki is somewhat differnt from the dutch one, see: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boomkorvisserij -- For more of my pictures check my Flickr photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeroennoot/ |
