question) for this small, 22 year old 32 foot sailboat with about the
performance, space and appeal of a Vanguard????? An Allied Seawind is no Pearson Vanguard. It's far better. I recently sold one in CA for 41K that doesn't look as good. I have to say that the sailboat market is out of control as of late, with boats selling for really high prices. Maybe the gas prices are effecting things. If you have a "wanted" boat, you can name your price as of late. RB ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec.boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup. yet, there is a Sparkman & Stephans 38 footer going begging for several years
at much less asking? Something doesn't sound right. S&S doesn't mean a thing. Plenty of S&S boats out there that are crap. But Allied's are generally solid boats with a following like Westsails. We are selling our 38' Aluminum sloop, designed by S&S and built by Minnefords.
Below is a description, and a net adddress to a brokers site with pictures. Please Email for info. I've seen that before. Pretty boat, but she's a far different animal compared to the Allied. I'm surprised she's not sold yet, but some folks shy away from metal boats. Lots of history for that boat! A Vanguard is longer, wider, more room, carries more sail, is very seaworthy and goes about 25% of the asking price of that particular Seawind. Besides, the wheel on a Vanguard doe not block the companion way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec.boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup. Even at $42k he can't get an offer. I couldn't imagine paying $49k for a Seawind. Four years ago (near the height of the market) they were asking mid 20's. I'm the owner of the 38' S&S aluminum sloop. We priced the boat at $54k orig, then dropped the price to $42k when we moved from OR to FL. The boat needs a little cosmetic work and a little tlc. If the boat looked like a showroom boat, we would be asking double the price. The new broker wants to double the price of the boat, to attract more buyers. Sometime low prices keep people away. Must be a piece of .... etc. She really is a strong, safe, and fast boat. So I ask you captains, what's a fair price for her? Oh, the reason we are selling her is My boat is in the backyard here in FL (on the hard) and we don't need 2! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec.boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup. Minneford's built good boats, and certainly Vanguards were solid boats. A
Vanguard is longer, wider, more room, carries more sail, is very seaworthy and goes about 25% of the asking price of that particular Seawind. The average buyer does not usually seek out a boat built at Minnefords. They want a boat people have heard of and one that can be resold. Pearson Vanguards sell under 20K all the time. They also have a variety of problems (mostly deck, such as gell peel) along with the Wanderers. The listed Allied is 10 years newer than the average Vanguard as well. The reputation of the Allied's is simply higher than the Vanguard. It's public perception that commands the market. Jax, the market is far higher now, especially for good name boats. It's bordering on silly with very high asking prices...and people are paying. Most of the people I know, who've traded up this year, all made money. Rough times for the deal seeker who wants a quality boat. My own C&C is worth much more today than she was just 5-6 years ago. You have a beautiful boat and she has good history. Your price is more than fair, but she's a very unique boat that seeks a unique buyer. Most folks want a "common" boat with a firm value (Pearson, Catalina, Hunter, Island Packet) and are worried about buying a boat like yours, unless they are well schooled and want "that" boat. I wish you the best of luck with her and hope she finds a home soon. Robert B N.M. yet, Westsails are going begging on SF area for under $30k, and bunches under
$40K to $50K. Saw a decent W-32 go for $27K in Melbourne, and an undecent one go for $19K in the keys just four months ago. $50k for a Seawind 32 needs a numskul buyer. Out of 19 listed on Yachtworld, just 2 are below 40K and they are older examples. A really nice Westsail usually commands in the area of 35-45K and more if it's a late 70's or 1980's boat. Smart sellers ask for more and then deal. The Allied 2 will command mid 30s and up for a nice one. After some very good press on these boats as classic budget blue water boats, thier price jumped. I had the chance to buy a good one last year at 32K. I could have made another 10K just by flipping her, but someone in Whitestone beat me to it and did exactly that. It's an "asking" price, Jax. If it's a nice enough boat, you work on the deal. If you owned one of these boats, you'd prefer top dollar as well. No need to hand over a popular design at a deal price to because someone else needs a bargain. I just put a deal together for someone on a C&C 33. The asking price was high and probably scared off a few folks. Too bad for them because the boat was a true gem and the owner was willing to deal. In the end everyone was happy. In my short time selling yachts, I've learned that asking prices are only skin deep. You don't let them worry you if you want the boat. Anyway, are you looking for an Allied boat? stew's? No, it was a 1975, completely restored except for the standing rigging and red awlgrip. Asking was way to high at 39K, but reflected her gear and repower. She went for 27K because the owner liked my friend's sister! Hey, you use what you got! She
went for 27K I am aware of a decent one that went for $22k recently. Which seems a rather better deal than a Seawind for $49k asking. btw, I understand there are Westsail 42's coming asking for less than six figures today. I don't follow boats of that size once I figured out that traveling by sailboat needs only a place to sleep really. everything else is everything else, at least while sailing. anchored for months on end is something else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec.boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup. I am aware of a decent one that went for $22k recently. Which seems a rather
better deal than a Seawind for $49k asking. I don't know much about decent boats. This particular C&C 33 was practically a showpiece, really beautiful and probably worth 40K based on sail inventory alone. Seawind for 49K asking has little to do with what she'll sell for and if she's a "gem" with a lot of gear, she may be worth far more than other examples. A Tartan 37 recently sold for 20K above FMV because of her state of restoration. Still, I find the price of sailboats to be steadily increasing for popular builders. Especially if you want a really nice example that is better than decent. RB ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec.boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup.
