Ten years and still reading. But you're right, it's pretty dead.
Didn't I see a post from Myron not long ago? I suspect there are a
few others who still hope against hope for a live group again.

It seems that ISPs are dropping Usenet support. Between that and all the
"competition" with more user-friendly forums, it seems like the
handwriting is on the wall. Usenet will likely die soon. Bummer, it's
been a fun ride.

Yeah, I posted something as a test balloon, and got no replies.

I miss the old rbp also, and I don't find Boatertalk to be a good
substitute. Too many folks there...too many 'experts' with a narrow
range of experience, and the posting style (content in the header)
seems too much like a group SMS-fest.

I still have some great stuff to share, if rbp wasn't so dead. Summer
of 2006 I ran the first descent of the Delger-Muron river in Outer
Mongolia...I owe Canoe&Kayak magazine an article on it, but I never
got around to writing it...

I still check in regularly, but have moved mostly to Yahoo activity
specific groups. Usenet was a great forum in its day, but it has a
limited lifetime. Google and Yahoo are working hard to make it go
away. Fewer and fewer ISP provide newsgroup access.

Usenet went away and then came back from my ISP - I had been meaning to
bitch, but I shoe horses and summer is my busy (think 70 hour weeks) season,
so apparently someone else did before I got the chance.

So, where'd everybody go? It's not like kayaking is less popular than
before (just the opposite, IMHO).

Is there a web-based watering hole where everybody gathers now? That's
what happened to the sailing and skiing newsgroups that I participate
in. Where's the rbp web substitute?

Here I am in bored waiting for a call and decide to have a peek at rbp
for the first time in months and what do I find but old familiar
friends like Galen and Tom and Myron.

I miss the old days of RBP, but like many others I've move on. Moved
on a couple of times in fact, first to NPMB and later to P.net.

Nowadays though I'm less and less interested in spending time on
paddling message boards.

But I still miss my old rbp friends.

Looks like there are now a lot of web-based forums that not only cater
to specific groups of boaters (fla****er, sea, rodeo, river running
etc.), but that are aiming at boaters from individual countries and even
regions as well. The greater numer of people online nowadays sure help
to make even pretty small forums seem as active as RBP once was. That
does come at the price of splitting an international community into such
tiny bits that not a lot of folks seem to even know that there are
others on boating forums as well any more.

The interface of those forums is different and the messages in some
forums are dropping off the page quickly. I also find the atmosphere
very different from RBP, but that may be due to a greater number of
participants influencing it. A good thing is that with many of those
forums, there are active admins who can actually do something about most
trolls.

Still, IMO, they are not a real substitute to the atmosphere of the old
RBP community of the middle to late 90's.

I will remember that time fondly, and I still am in touch with several
friends from back then. Alas, it's no more, and it's time to move on.

Hi Dan, and all! Yes, there are still a few of us RBP old timers
around.

Ahhhh, for the heyday of RBP, huh? Scott Bristow (RIP) lending his
wise advice, me beating up on Corran Addison for Riot's (IMHO) crappy
color selections and goading him into actually molding me a PINK 007
(which I heard he/Riot actually produced, but I unfortunately never
got to possess :-( ), and of course the ubiquitous rantings of...who
was that (Scott something?) that owned property on and across Boulder
Creek, who called me the Ivory Tower Anarchist? Hee hee!

I don't get to boat much anymore, what with the price of gasoline and
the fact that I'm still trying to fight my way through nursing school
after an abrupt segue interruption in my progress to becoming an RN
(which I'm still mired in, unfortunately.)

I do get up to Indy once a year, for the Indy 500. I've become quite
the racefan after inheriting my brother's (RIP) ticket. Email me and
maybe we can hook up at the race or the race party some year! :-)

Hey Galen:
Nope, last I checked it was still floating high and dry. The intent
was to bring it to Hong Kong with me, but once I got here I discovered
that what sells as an apartment here would be considered a large
closet in the states, so its still sitting in my storage shed in
Maine. I take it out each time I'm home in the summer, and I love to
tell folks how someone I met on the internet gave it to me (I get a
lot of amazed stares for that g). I'm starting to seriously consider
having it shipped here and storing it at the school so I can go paddle
after work. Age, rust and lethargy are catching up with me, and I need
an outlet. If I get over my inane fear of sitting in closed cockpit
boats (Wilko can tell you about that), then I'd want to take the
'Galen' out in the open water around the islands here.

Thanks again for the boat! :-)

That's good to hear, I had visions of it sinking. In a previous life,
I owned a 32 foot sloop for which I had purchased an inflatable
dinghy. It was a fairly fancy model, complete with a rigid plate for
an outboard, "Boston" valves, etc. I got it for emergencies on the
boat, but figured it might make a good tender for the sailboat also. I
pumped it up and tossed it in the water one day, only to discover that
a mouse (or rat, I wasn't there) had chewed into the air compartments.
The dinghy didn't exactly sink, as it had three independent air
chambers, but the mouse had managed to compromise two of them, so it
didn't exactly ride high in the water. I had thought of the same
thing happening to the kayak, I'm glad it didn't.

Last time I was very active I had just sent you a boat. *I hope it
didn't sink or anything when you put it together, or, if it did you
were shallow water at least. *Is that thing still floating or has it
gone to that great boatyard in the sky?

*In a previous life,
I owned a 32 foot sloop for which I had purchased an inflatable
dinghy. *It was a fairly fancy model, complete with a rigid plate for
an outboard, "Boston" valves, etc. *I got it for emergencies on the
boat, but figured it might make a good tender for the sailboat also. I
pumped it up and tossed it in the water one day, only to discover that
a mouse (or rat, I wasn't there) had chewed into the air compartments.
The dinghy didn't exactly sink, as it had three independent air
chambers, but the mouse had managed to compromise two of them, so it
didn't exactly ride high in the water. *I had thought of the same
thing happening to the kayak, I'm glad it didn't.- Hide quoted text -

Oh great. I tell you that I have a fear of closed cockpit boats, that
I hope to address this fear by padding out among the islands here in
HK in open water, and you tell me that you imagined that this boat
would SINK??

Just what I need to worry about! g

VERY abruptly here and on a pool site...he was mid-argument. His total

IRL.

Meanwhile, I try searching the traces of his messages, hints and clues
in his posts, etc, but never get anywhere. I *did* once track him to a
MUD site, and tried to log on to his account with his username to find
his personal details, but could not guess his password. The hint was
'what is my hometown', and on rbp once I tried to get some hint from
him about that, but he was tight-lipped. I ended up just telling the
MUD bot to 'send me my password update' about 50 times. He left rbp
less than 24 hours after that...I always secretly hoped that he got
weirded out by the emails, maybe realized that he was being stalked,
and clammed up.

Either way, the effect he had on rbp was very interesting. The only
person who seemed unfazed was ratt. In retrospect, I wonder if we'd
all deal with him differently...in any case, it sure was strange
times....

As I recall the thing has internal sp*ns*ns. I think you blow them up
to "add to the rigidity" of the boat or somesuch nonsense. The thing
is supposed to be pretty unsinkable, but don't take that as a
challenge. It also has a really big cockpit, it isn't like a hard
shell kayak at all. It also comes with an unconditional guarantee
that if you ever lose your life in it they will refund the complete
price, no embarrassing questions asked. (You don' need no stinkin'
floatation...)

Since we're talking about how some RBP'ers dealt with the trolls, I know
from a well informed source that Timmy the sponsonman didn't like being
called every couple of minutes, day after day, especially during the night.

Amazing how effective a phone line without number recognition, a simple
modem and dial up software can be in this era of fast internet
connections. :-)

I had remarkable luck with just putting him on ignore...so much so in fact
that I'd forgotten about him until you mentioned him.

If I wanted amusement, there were always other people's responses to him.
