Got a whoopee cushion instead. Low maintenance. Remember the frogman which used baking soda in its base to bob up and down in the water? Kelloggs or General Mills boxtop and 50 cents. A baking soda powered boat would have been nice. So, yes. --Vic Well, there was a baking soda powered submarine...and also a rubber band gun. |

Kelloggs? --Vic Crikey, I was in the first or second grade, I think, at Davis Street Elementary School in New Haven. It was either Kellog's or Cheerios. My old Davis Street primary school became a "magnet school," whatever the hell that is. Apparently my old junior high, which was built in the 19th Century, is being renovated again and expanded again. At least they are still there... :) You know...I seem to remember the sub used baking powder, not baking soda. Is that possible? -- |

They had a whistle you put in a car exhaust pipe. Bendable prongs kept it there. The illustration showed the noise coming out the exhaust, and the shocked look on the driver's face. Cost 75 cents. I saved my nickel allowance for weeks to get one, finally sent off the order, and waited on pins and needles for the mailman to deliver it- took about 4 weeks. It was my mission in life. It finally came and I fondled it for some hours until "Uncle Johnny" came over to visit my dad. He was my aunt's boyfriend. I snuck up behind his car, a '56 Fury, and inserted it in the tailpipe. But when I saw the Fury had duals, I hoped that wouldn't be a problem. I put it the driver side pipe. I almost had a heart attack while I waited for him to leave, I was so excited thinking about the noise it would make and the look of shock on his face when he heard it. It would be terrific. Better than any joy buzzer stuff. At last he came out, and got in the Fury. My heart was pounding. When he started it up, I heard nothing. But when he put it in drive and pulled away I could hear a slight whistle. He turned the corner and disappeared. Never saw him or the whistle again. He had broken up with my aunt. I must say it was pretty depressing, and I never bought a Johnson Smith item again, and seldom even perused the catalog due to the painful memories it recalled. I'm over it now, though. Almost. --Vic |

Gawd, I just can't imagine living my life under a desk like you and the salty troll, I understand that being outed would take away the only little sockpuppet victories you have. I had a baking powder submarine, about four inches, as well as the frogman. Casady |
