Default Boats and Gas

My wife is a Lincoln Navigator freak. She's had three (maybe four) of them.

back when fuel prices were climbing daily.

As she drove, I noticed that her left directional (blinker) was operating at
a very slow cycle compared to the right directional.
I mentioned to her that she should check the lights in her blinkers because
it appeared that one of them on the left side was probably burned out.

Her response?

"Oh, is *that* what it is? I noticed it before, but figured it was because
I've been using regular gas instead of premium."

We bought a two year old Navigator and put 125 000 miles on it in four
years. All on regular gas. At 175k it developed a leaking valve guide.
I figured the writing was on the wall and bought a rebuilt motor, with
a 75k warranty. We plan to keep the car which shows no visible wear
after six years. The car has needed fluids and filters and brake pads
once. Spark plugs are every 100k, like most cars.

I know someone who has been driving the same VW Beetle for fifty
years. Never a breakdown They call it preventive maintainance. He
overhauls the motor every 100k, before it really needs it. 65 one way
mile commute, God knows how many miles are on it. Probably a mil and a
half. All highway miles.
