What is the Navy tradition with crewmen crossing over the equator for
the first time on a ship? They showed it on the PBS "Carrier"
series.........something about polywogs.

Never did that, so I don't know. Navy's got a lot of weird
"traditions" I managed to avoid.
There was one involving a broomstick and Navy Special Fuel Oil
I think. Just heard it mentioned.

No. The tradition and ceremony when crossing the equator is called becoming
a "Shellback".
