Sounds good. Burgers on the grill for us tonight.

We can finally use our deck tonight and cook out. Our 13 year old
cedar deck was beat up and I got tired of trying to maintain it. We
had the flooring replaced with Eon Ultra deck boards and Trex railing.
The contractor started on Monday and finished the decking and railing
today. The skirting will be finished on Monday.

So..........we can now use the deck and it looks great!

The beauty of it is that I haven't been around most of the day. Went

Even better, my filters don't allow most of the posts from the Seven

It sort of was - not location wise but by a genuine Chicago pizzeria
operator who moved East.

One of the best pizzas I've had in a while.

Very impressed.

Hire a good Amish carpentry crew and relax. They know wood, even ersatz
wood, they show up on time, clean up after themselves, they don't drink,
they don't smoke, they don't do drugs, and they don't steal. Union
contractors around here won't touch small-scale individual residential
work, like a deck,so when I need carpentry work, I contact one of the
elders.

You do not want to do it yourself if you want professional looking
results. The guys doing our job were certified by Eon and Trex as
neither the decking or railing are a simple installation like wood is.

Eon decking was rated best by Consumer Reports testing in a variety of
categories. Mechanical fasteners are used below the deck face with no
fasteners used on the face of the decking resulting in a very clean
look. Our contractor upgraded us to Ultra (heavier) at no cost.

There aren't any.

I did have an experience with an Amish barn crew though - that was
incredible. I bought a old post and beam barn at an auction - barn
and contents - and looked around for a crew to disassemble the barn
and rebuild it. One of the local farmer's recommended a crew out of
Pennsylvania.

After all the prep work on the new foundation was done, I called these
guys - they gave me a great quote - deal done.

Torn down, transported and the skeleton back up on the new foundation
the same day. Barn sides and roofed the next - done.

Amazing.

Wood? We don't need no stinking wood.

Hell, I could install a wood deck but the problem is the older you get
the less maintenance you want.

Wood decks are a PITA.

Besides wanting a professional looking result I am at the point in my
life where I hire professional contractors to do the big house
projects I used to do.

I constructed 2 wood decks......with the first taking close to the
entire summer because I was out of town just about every week. It
was a bi-level beauty wrapping around 2 oak trees and was pretty big.
No more deck building for me.

The only projects I will now do myself are minor fix-up things.
Other than that...........I get quotes from 3-4 professional
contractors having good credentials and customer reviews.

Eon decking, unlike Trek and similar composites is 100% plastic. We
considered it at one point but were convinced to stick with the composites.
Apparently, it is tricky to install properly and tends to "pop" and
"squeak" due to a higher thermal expansion coefficient. It also is
reported to scratch easily. We were told that most contractors try to
advise against it.

Not knocking the OP's choice .... just stating our experience for the
benefit of others. Research first.

Isn't Consumer Union the same company that rated Dell highest in
customer satisfaction when you went looking for laptops? If CU rated
this product HIGH, you should look again.

Whenever I have seen a CU rating on a product I was VERY familiar with,
they ALWAYS were wrong.

See what the real experts are saying about Dell quality.

Dell Quality Control Issues Not Going Away Dell continues to battle
quality control problems, and is now offering make-goods to customers
who bought 17-inch notebooks with LCD problems. Lionel Menchacha, at
Dell's corporate blog, writes:

Here's what they found: on some 17-inch LCD displays shipped with Dell
Inspiron 9200, 9300 and Dell XPS Gen 2 notebooks, a one pixel wide
vertical line may develop across the LCD screen over time. Systems that
may be affected by this issue shipped from Nov. 2004 through Oct 2006.

Here's what we're doing: for affected systems, Dell is offering to
replace any LCD that develops a vertical line within three years of
purchase, at no charge for parts and labor. Also, Dell will offer
refunds to customers who paid Dell to replace defective LCDs with this
issue.

The ongoing issues haven't escaped the notice of MGI Research, which
offered up this remark:

Recent data points indicate that on top of mounting corporate governance
and sluggish growth issues . . . Dell may be also battling quality
control problems. The quality problem relates to low end servers,
laptops, and desktops, not the high-end server models. Channel checks
indicate a noticeable increase in the number of machines that need to be
serviced by Dell in the field shortly after delivery, and also units
returned to Dell for replacement/repair.

MGI adds:

The rise of problems with low end servers and desktops is troubling --
and our checks indicate that it is costing Dell money and starting to
erode its brand. The timing of this quality lapse could not be worse for
management, considering the recent announcements about errors in
accounting and lax financial controls.

An executive of a system builder that often competes with Dell said he
finds the company has been much less cost-competitive since Michael Dell
has returned to the CEO position at the company, and that the PC maker
is exhibiting a certain amount of "confusion" in competing for business
throughout this quarter.

Cost issues and turmoil appear to be piling on to Dell's quality issues
from last year, when the company recalled 4.2 million notebook batteries
due to fire hazards. For its part, though, Dell has said it has found
its response to customers with quality or technical problems has improved.

In the 1990s Dell switched from using primarily ATX motherboards and PSU
to using boards and power-supplies with mechanically-identical but
differently-wired connectors. This meant customers wishing to upgrade
their hardware could encounter unforeseen problems. However, company
practice in this respect changed in 2003.[82][83]

In 2005, according to the Better Business Bureau, complaints about Dell
more than doubled, to 1,533 after earnings grew 52% that year.

Consumer complaints about the quality of customer-service mounted, and
in 2006, Dell acknowledged that it had problems with customer-service.
Issues included call-transfers[84] of more than 45% of calls and long
wait-times. Dell's blog detailed the response:[85] "We’re spending more
than a $100 million — and a lot of blood, sweat and tears of talented
people — to fix this." Later in the year, the company increased its
spending on customer-service to $150 million.[86]

In May, 2008 the New York Supreme Court ruled that Dell and Dell
Financial Services "engaged in fraud, false advertising, deceptive
business practices, and abusive debt collection practices." The relevant
lawsuit aimed primarily[citation needed] to highlight and seek
restitution for a lack of technical support given to customers by Dell.
The court plans to hold further proceedings to determine how much money
Dell has to pay out to customers and how much profit Dell made
unlawfully in New York.[87]

But, for the benefit of others, I wouldn't rely simply on Consumer Reports.

Here's a few comments about the stuff made by professional contractors:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Simply put, Eon SUCKS! Don't waste your money on this poorly engineered and
unbelievably misrepresented (Consumer Reports 04 endorsement) product."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

"Eon decking is the worse decking material I ever used. My client picked it
out. Trying to use the installation instructions, we spent two days trying
to install the decking. It was impossible to install the decking per
instructions and we did the best we could with it. The expansion and
contraction of the decking material is so great that it is dangerous to walk
on.

After three years, my client (whose husband has died) called me in tears
wanting to know what could be done with the decking. She had written to Eon
and they wrote back and said the decking was installed improperly. After we
had installed it, we found they had just changed the installation
instructions!

Stay away from Eon, it is the worse of the worse decking made."

----------------------------------------------------------------------

" .... I won't offer any warranty on Eon decking anymore.

I thought you promised to ignore me.......

Regardless...........I did not rely only on CS. I relied on several
contractors and their opinion of various decking materials.

For every negative comment you find on the internet about
Eon..........I can find 5 positive ones. I think the quality of the
contractors installation has a lot do do with the complaints.

We found a good one.

I do not know why you (and others here) decided to make this a ****ing

Have a good evening.

PS: Tom: I will give you an update on the deck material over the

Next time you want to do some research, instead of using CR, try
flipping a coin or using a dart board.

Here are some expert reviews concerning the problems with CR reviews:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_Reports

http://www.allpar.com/cr.html

http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/200...r-reports.html

Remember I am the person who told you that you should follow the mfg'ers
recommended maintenance schedule for changing your impeller, that you
should not install an incorrect thermostat just because that is the one
the dealer has in stock, and warned you about the severe problems people
have had with Vista. I have been batting a 1000 with my recommendations.

I am here to help.

You posted about your new deck, endorsing a material that quite frankly is
controversial to say the least.
You may influence others to make the same mistake you just did. (sorry

I will - thanks for the info.

I need to check with my neighbor - who is a good guy by the way - he's
just a putz when it comes to DIY. :)

It still looks great after 4 years in the Florida sun. It does
require closer spacing on the stringers however. I was ready to go
with wood decking until I saw the WeatherBest at a neighbors.
Ours is installed with stainless steel, square drive screws. They
have a small head which recesses into the deck when driven and become
almost invisible.

I do not know why you (and others here) decided to make this a ****ing
contest Dick but that is what some folks want this place to be
about.

Have a good evening.

PS: *Tom: *I will give you an update on the deck material over the
remaining season if you want me to.

It's not a ****ing contest.

Sure it is. You and Reggie made sure to make it one. Until then it
was a great discussion.
BTW: Whatever happened to your promise to ignore me?

YMMV.

Well, it's done, so enjoy it.

What kind of research did you do when you picked this brand? Did you
check CR?
