![]() "hk" wrote in message . .. You do understand I think McCain is entitled to whatever social security payments he receives, right? That's not the point. The point is, if McCain were so in favor of privatization of social security and cutting benefits for retirees and the disabled, well, he ought to not accept the checks. It's just more of the rich Republican hypocrisy. You'll get a kick out of this one. Not in the same league of course, but ..... Back in 2000, I sold my company. My share of the proceeds was more than enough to retire on. Four years later, due to the sale/merger of the larger company that bought it, an opportunity to buy my company back presented itself. My company's business area did not fit within their future plans. We were considered too "high tech". So, I helped negotiate a deal whereby my son bought back the company and held the majority of stock. He has run it for the past 4-5 years and has done a very good job at continuing growth, while maintaining the original "culture" and excellent reputation the companies people and products have earned over the years. I remained an "employee/consultant", earning the minimum annual salary to qualify for health plan participation. Over the past year the company showed up on the radar screen again of another group who invest in or acquire technology based companies in specific technological growth areas. Discussions commenced, resulting in them making a very attractive offer to fully acquire the company. My son wants to move on to other things, and I have no interest in the day to day management of a business that I've been involved in for the past 30 something years. Too many "re-runs". The deal was closed a couple of weeks ago. As is typical of this type of acquisition, both my son's and my "employment" and pay checks were terminated. We have both been retained as potential consultants, to be paid on a case by case basis, if required. So, we were sitting around last night, thinking of "what's next" in our lives when my brother mentioned that we were both probably eligible for unemployment benefits. Thinking about it, I realized that for the first time in my life, maybe it was now time to become a Democrat. (Just to keep it straight ..... we *won't* file or collect unemployment. But, we had fun thinking about it) Eisboch |
