It really is a great fishing report if you fish Lake Lanier. May 30, 2008 LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 13.6 FEET, AND LAKE IS STAINED AND THE CREEKS AND THE RIVERS ARE STAINED & 75 DEGREES. Black bass fishing has been fair. There is a fair top water bike early each morning in the creeks. Small top water lures like the Zara Spook and the small Red Fins are working, but cover a lot of water. A light Texas rigged worm in a u tail will work on wood and bank cover. Small live bait books and small shiners or spot tail minnows will catch a largemouth around these same locations. Also try a white or Lake Lanier Shad color Leverage 3/8 ounce spinner bait and a white Rooster Tail in medium sizes. During the late afternoons, concentrate your efforts all in the north end of the lake. Small white spinner baits and small all white crank baits are the best choices. Mid day fishing has been slow to duty to the heat. Also try a jig and pig in black and blue combinations after dark. Large dark colored crank baits have been fair late afternoons around docks. Continue to move around and fish pockets and points all afternoon. Small Shad Raps are fair and use light 6 pound test on smaller sizes of any crank bait. If you want to try some live lizards around docks and on man made brush piles, use weed less hooks and light line with a small split shot. Spotted bass fishing has been good and top water bite is on. Be aware as the spots and the stripers will mix together and feed on the any type of top water bait. The Red Fin is the hot bait but almost anything on top will work. Work main lake long points for spots feeding on small baits and stay out at least 70 feet off these points. A June Zoom mini crawfish has been very good in light green colors. And some Jacks Juice these plastic baits. Blue backs and shiners on free lines will work and Three Sisters has been a good place to find these fish. Small green plastic worms and light 8 pound test line and 6 pound test line will work for the spots. Use a medium action 6 and ½ foot spinning rod and fish these baits very slowly. Man made brush piles at 17 to 30 feet have large concentrations of the spotted bass. Work all these baits especially, soft plastics very slowly. Use a small Mustad worm 1/0 hooks and fish these baits vertically. The night fishing for spotted bass has been good with large Norman June bug crank bail and large black spinner baits. Concentrate your efforts all the main lake humps and ridges at depths of 15 to 35 feet. These bigger spotted bass will bite up until 3 am. Use heavy line and heavy tackle as these larger spots really take a bait hard and head to deep water fast. If there is brush on the location, this heavy tackle will get the fish away from it quicker. Also down line live bait for the large spots after dark. This striper report is from Captain Chuck Biggers, Southern Striper Guide Service. 404 to 405 to 8280 Striper fishing is good and the top water bite is getting better this week. I am now finding big schools of fish and it is a beautiful thing to see my Lowrance just covered up. Flat lines in the morning for an hour after sunrise will work well. Put them out 60 to 80 feet behind the boat. Use a split shot 6' in front of your bait to get them a little deeper. Most of the fish are 20 to 40 feet deep. Switch to down lines after about an hour or so after sunrise. Check out the steep banks from mid creeks to the mouth. Blueback herring and jumbo shiners seem to be this week's striper cuisine. I have had them pull down five lines at one time in my boat this week. AWESOME! We see some great schools above Gainesville Marina still in the 20 to 40 foot depth. Fishing is great till around noon, then the bite drops off significantly and early morning is best. The south end of the lake is fair on long slick points on the main lake or in some creeks and the same pattern applies. Use 6 foot fluorocarbon leaders with 12 to 14 pound test and #6 to #2 hooks for best results. This report is provided to you by Captain Charles Biggers. Southern Striper Guide Service 404-405-8280. FWIW, in my parts, The People's Broken Republic of California, when
someone reports stained water, visibility is about 2' to 4' deep. Muddy means visibility is less than 2' and clear means visibility below 4'. But we speak funny in California. Everyone is a liar! Oh, that reminds me... Take a guide's fishing report with a grain of salt unless he's reporting his actual results (with photos!). Bait shops and such will rarely admit to lousy fishing. It's bad for business! |

Me, too, though a 150-pound engine seems too heavy these days for "clamps." And my post referring to clamps was made before I looked up the engine... I'm still not sure those are clamps on the bracket. |

It can't be on the boat. A friend parks his boat under a tree with a stout branch, a block and takes his 20hp off in about 15 minutes. Cool idea. -- John *H* |

The water is red from the red clay runoff, this part of Georgia has lots of red clay. It happens after a heavy rain and results in low visibility. Photo of Georgia Red Clay: http://tinyurl.com/4ma8f9 Used to see that when I was stationed in Mississippi - saw a lot of it in Alabama - something about the SE and red clay. Around here when you talk stained water, it's usually tannin from pine trees - ugly brown color. Everyone knows that Georgia red clay gets around. -- John *H* |

I keep a separate set of crocs, on the boat, so I don't track any clay on board the boat. I did buy a new pair of "fake crocs today. They were $8.99 at target. It will be interesting to see how they feel and hold up compared to the $29.99 pair I purchased at REI yesterday. |

Everyone in Miss. want to know who carried all that Georgia Red Clay all the way over there. Can you imagine how many trucks it too? ;) Here is a great photo of the dangers of Georgia Red Clay. http://tinyurl.com/3zk66f |
