I've never had a bearing buddy fail either. You just have to make sure to
check them, and grease them as necessary. Pretty simple stuff. --Mike wrote in message ... John H. wrote: Anyone ever used them? I've never bought either the Fulton or the Bearing Buddy, but the damn things are sized to the thousandth of an inch. You'd think they'd stay on! It's sounding like no one's heard of the Fulton Bearing Protector, this one: http://tinyurl.com/5pebls. Maybe I'd better stick to the tried and true Bearing Buddy, and keep it maintained and tight! Thanks for all the responses. -- John *H* |

Over time the pressure on the grease needs to be restored with a pump or two on the grease gun. The need for frequent regreasing indicates a failure somewhere else (spindle seal). Any possible failure of bearing buddies should be detected in time to prevent bearing/spindle damage. That is, of course, if your eyes send messages to your brain and your brain processes that information correctly. :-) |

Since I tow anywhere from 15 miles to 1000 miles over non-maintained highways (California and Washington) they get beat off the vehicle. Last axle replacement was with a Dexter axle with a built in lube system. So one Dexter axle and one with BB's. Looking to replace before the next trip to Tofino with oil bath hubs. |

I have had no problems with them, ever.. Nope, crappy roads. The seals will not hold enough pressure to blow out the hubs with interference fit, I even added set screws, We are a bankruot state that passed a law that highway funds had to be spent on highways, but the Legislature and Govenator still insist on borrowing the money for the general fundl. Interstates with potholes, and major cracks. Washington state also has bad interstates, Oregon spends it's highway dollars on roads. Last year, I lost a buddy and discovered the axle shot about 50 miles into Oregon. Replaced the axle and on the other axle lost a BB about 50 miles into Washington. Discovered that one shortly after it left. |

I can't tell the difference except for the packaging. I've never had a problem with either. I suspect they are made by the same company and marketed seperate. I've gone over them, compared side-by-each, measured and even took both apart - there is no difference. Just don't overfill them. |

OK, another question:P If I buy and install them, I'll have to grease them using a marine grease. Now, I've read that different greases should not be mixed. Does this mean that I need to track down the specific grease currently in the new trailer hubs and match it, or will the addition of *any* marine grease work? -- John *H* |

Price being equal, I'd go with BB. |

The trailer Mfr. might have used 1 product and the dealer might have used something else to top off. Compatibility issues? I bought an axle once that came packed with the thick stringy stuff. I had to do the afore mentioned process to use my preferred grease. If your trailer has brakes, you might need a special hi-temp grease. |

I bought a trailer with those recently but the jury will be out for a few years while I decide whether or not I prefer them. Rick |
