Why we left Florida
We have more of a bug problem than anything else. Imagine when trimming
a tree, you all of the sudden get covered in swarming American Cockroaches that fly to boot. I use Cypermethrin inside and outside my property to keep these guys under control. I have seen brand new homes in heavily wooded areas infested with bugs and rats in just 2 short weeks. We clear huge parcels of land to build a house, thus we kill off these bugs natural predators like frogs, bats, birds, lizards, etc., then we whine that the bugs are taking over. We allow importing of huge lizards that kill off these natural predators. We allow ships to discharge their ballast tanks in our local shores and wonder how the snakehead fish & jellyfish took over many of our rivers and bays...let's face it, humans are stupid. And as long as we keep sticking our greedy noses where it don't belong, these creatures will take full advantage of our short sighted thinking. Why we left Florida
Your wife should be commended. These lizards help keep many pests in check.
Just look at it this way. A common bat eats it's own weight each day in insects. If we had no bats, Florida would be uninhabitable, and so would the rest of the world. There are more ants pound for pound, than people. There are more termites pound for pound than people. There are more rats than people. There are more live fish in the sea than all the humans that ever lived combined. We are just temporary land barrons on this planet. We need to protect these natural predators at all costs. These creatures did fine for the past 250+ million years without our interference. They will be here long after we are extinct as a species. "Short Wave Sportfishing" wrote in message ... snip.. One of the funnnier things I've ever seen was at Bein Hoa AFB in Vietnam. One of the fighter groups there had a Burmese Python in captivity - guys used to visit and pull the snake out of it's cage, drap it around their shoulders and take a picture. Proceeds went to the fighter squadron bar fund. One of our guys paid the money and did the snake/shoulders thing until it bit him and started wrapping itself around. I'll give the kid credit - he didn't panic and we got the snake off of him in short order, but they stopped the picture deal immediately. The snake ended up at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raliegh, NC. Are you sure your guy didn't bite the snake first? |

I've trekked canoed camped etc. all over the Florida swamps. All I can say is that's a hell of a photoshop job! The snakes are most likely a real photo. *They do next like that in the winter for added warmth. *A bunch of years ago, a buddy's neighbor in Pinole, CA had the wife complain about a bussing coming from under the kitchen sink. *Was a large nest of rattlesnakes under the house below the kitchen. *We have rattle snakes in the area. *The local hospital averages 9 snakebites a year. *Almost all involve beer and people out on Mines Rd. in Livermore.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Yeah, but I've never ever seen them in that big of a concentration. There is a Rattlesnake Roundup in a small town outside of Tampa, FL and those swampbillies know rattlesnakes. They hardly ever come with any more than a dozen to the roundup. My wife's sister walks a path in a park near her house in Walnut Creek that seems to see it's share of rattlers. Personally, and again, I'm a woods exploring kind of person, I've never seen one in your area. I know they are there, just never seen one, even on the slopes of Mt. Diablo. |
