Pulled the boat cover...
and it looks like the Ranger came through the winter just fine.
Probably just a quick wash and light wax, power wash the interior and we're off and running. The new hull bottom looks real good - changed the lines of the boat quite a bit - I didn't notice that when I picked it up in December. Here's some images. http://www.swsports.org/images/Pictures/bottom01.JPG http://www.swsports.org/images/Pictures/bottom02.JPG http://www.swsports.org/images/Pictures/bottom03.JPG http://www.swsports.org/images/Pictures/bottom04.JPG Season's getting closer - maybe first run next week. |

That is except in the pic that I saved and now it's black. Mold problem? |

The open sewerage in use at that time, like running right down the streets, was not a pretty sight and the stink, I'll leave that to your imagination. I remember my first liberty off the base. A couple of us shared a cab into town and as soon as we arrived mother nature called, number two. I walking into a gas station where the WC (water closet) was located in an adjacent building. I opened the door and there was a hole in floor for making a deposit. For some reason I lost the urge. Ah, the good ole days. Wouldn't trade them for all the tea in china. |

My next door neighbor is a former boomer skipper and tells some great stories about Russian subs. My favorite was his story about being trailed by a Russian H/K sub and they had an accident on board that seriously injured a couple of their sailors. They guys on the boomer heard it when it happened and as the Russian sub surfaced, he offered assistance which to his complete surprise was accepted. When he surfaced, popped the hatch and got out, he was amazed to find four other subs all on the surface - one American, one British and two Russian subs plus the boomer. Everybody had been playing tag with everybody else. Anyway, the Russians were transferred to the boomer for treatment until they could be transferred to shore side hospital. |

The Koreans, in Seoul, were still using the hole in the floor in the late 70's. They had modernized though, there were little concrete pads with shoe impressions next to the hole, to keep one from slipping in, I suppose. My last business trip to the Far East was in 1994. Many place still had the hole in the floor facilities. But some had a "special" water closet for "Westerners", a real commode. |

In fact it kept me out of the Marines. Army didn't mind, though. ========================= Between you, Dick, Tom, BAR and a couple of others I think we have all Armed Forces services present here. Thanks for serving. BTW: My son is having a blast on Okinawa. It's good he's getting it out of the way first rather than later. From what I've heard, it's a lot of fun when you are younger and fresh out of boot. Used to be being stationed on Okinawa was like being in the Pirate Navy with Pirate Marines. :) Or so I've been told. Don't know if it's the same way today. All we know right now is that he says he is having a good time with his trade (construction engineering) and being at OKI. He sent us pictures of the base, the town and the beach, including his group finding an octopus, dressing it (someone knew what they were doing) and cooking it. He did not say if he ate it, but I would bet that he did. Jim, is he a construction engineer now, or an equipment operator? |

My brother was a spook in the Navy stationed on Okinawa. Hasn't walked correctly since. Eisboch Strange. When my brother, Special Forces, had completed two tours in Vietnam, they wouldn't let him go back for another because the policy at the time limited the tours to two. So they sent him to Okinawa. From there he would go back to Nam for 90 days TDY, and then back to Okie for a couple weeks. This pattern continued for another year or so. Wonder if they knew each other. |

I am sure he will come back to the States with a tattoo........he told us over the holidays (before he shipped out) that he may get one. He may also come back with a new girlfriend. Who knows. ;-) FWIW, very few marriages between young military folks and either Koreans or Okinawans work out well. The cultures are very different. But, if he does marry one, good luck to him. |
