Governor Embattled *Democrat* Apologizes for His 'Private Failings' By Keith B. Richburg and Carrie Johnson Washington Post Staff Writers Thursday, March 13, 2008; A01 NEW YORK, March 12 -- New York Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer, a rising *Democratic* Party star who won election 16 months ago as a crusading reformer against corruption, announced his resignation Wednesday after being ensnared in a federal investigation that exposed his double life as a longtime regular client of high-priced prostitutes. With his wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, at his side, Spitzer apologized for what he said were "my private failings" and said he is stepping down so as not to "disrupt the people's work." He said the resignation will take effect Monday, to give his successor, Lt. Gov. David A. Are you allowed to read it? You might want to pull down the shades while doing so. The Washington Post is not fair and balanced by anyone's standards except Harry's. It's fair when the person reading it sees what he wants to see. In this case, it made JWFM happy because it associated Spitzer with the word "Democratic". Tomorrow, it may not please him as much.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - My paper is the Journal Inquirer... Hartford CT area.. You and Harrry seem to be pretty good at that. The Hartford Courant also identified Spitzer's political party in several of its articles, as did The Associated Press articles, which many papers carry. Your Journal Inquirer on the 10th carried an article by Amy Westfeldt, an AP reporter, that mentioned Spitzer's political party. There's a clue: I wonder if the AP licensing agreement says the client newspaper can't alter words in any articles they publish from AP. There's no such agreement. Newspapers cut and edit wire stories as a matter of course. http://www.journalinquirer.com/site/...pitzer&x=0&y=0 A search for "spitzer" turned up 5 results. The first two articles identify him as a Democrat. The other three do not. This may prove my theory: The newspaper assumes that unless you're living in a cave, you know by now that Spitzer's a Democrat. When I was studying journalism, we were taught to make sure every word we wrote served the one and only goal: To tell the story. |

You're guessing the reasons. I suspect they assume (correctly) that smart people already know Spitzer's party affiliation, and smart people (who have a life) realize it doesn't matter at all. But, you could find out for sure. http://www.journalinquirer.com/site/...45 8252&rfi=6 |

When you read an article about a Governor involved with prostitutes and the Governor's political party affiliation is not provided in the article you can only come to one conclusion. It's all about consistency and fairness. Either you provided the political party affiliation for all elected officials or for no elected officials. Providing political party affiliation for some and not others shows bias. |

Not yesterday or the day before. ***TODAY*** Now, tell me why mentioning his party affiliation TODAY adds any meaningful content. I'm the journalism professor, you're the student. Why would you include that information TODAY, knowing that it had already been mentioned plenty in prior days. |

Either you are consistent and you identify the political party affiliation of everyone or no one. The fact that his name has been in the news quite a bit lately and we can forgo identificaiton isn't in any of the style guides. |
