AVG software - Any experience here?

I've been looking around for a new anti-virus/spyware/firewall
provider as I'm highly dissatisfied with the Norton products - not so
much on the technical end, but their incessant begging for renewal
starting two months before the license is up.

I stumbled into AVG on the recommendation of a friend. She says it
works great and prefers it to Norton by a factor of 10.

Anybody else use it? I'm leaning towards AVG, but just want another
opinion.

Tom, I've only got their free home edition. (that's understandable,
eh?) and I suppose it works. it neven gives any warnings etc, that
something is in it's lair.

I've used the "freebie" AVG off and on a few times recently, and had no
problems with it. It seems to take less of a hit on performance than
some other more fully bodied suites.

Been using the free edition on three PCs here with no problems. I have
installed it on several friends machines with no reported problems.

I had it installed on my mothers computer, and she never got a virus,
but she is a low risk user. I changed from AVG to Avast when she
purchased a new computer due to a better review in one of the magazines
I read.

AVG and Avast are both considered light weight, small footprint AV and
do a fair job of catching virus, but might be slow to update databases
with new viruses.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus has been the highest rated, and is priced similar
to Norton.

I used McAfee because it is free from my ISP. It has a large footprint,
but does a great job.

I am basing my evalution on it's ability to catch the most current
virus, based upon the reviews by experts. You can still update your
antivirus database daily, and still not catch the latest variation of
viruses. The reviews i have read concerning AVG and Avast, (and I have
installed both of them), is they are good free programs but "scored
poorly when compared to Kaspersky and NOD32".

I have used AVG in the past. I seem to recall it affecting my boot speed and
or program load/run time. Sorry that's all I remember and improvements may
have been made to the software since. I have been using Avast for the last
couple of years and have no complaints about it. It even found an attempted

much on the technical end, but their incessant begging for renewal
starting two months before the license is up.

I stumbled into AVG on the recommendation of a friend. She says it
works great and prefers it to Norton by a factor of 10.

Anybody else use it? I'm leaning towards AVG, but just want another
opinion.

I had it installed on my mothers computer, and she never got a
virus, but she is a low risk user. I changed from AVG to Avast
when she purchased a new computer due to a better review in one of
the magazines I read.

AVG and Avast are both considered light weight, small footprint AV
and do a fair job of catching virus, but might be slow to update
databases with new viruses.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus has been the highest rated, and is priced
similar to Norton.

I used McAfee because it is free from my ISP. It has a large
footprint, but does a great job.

Even AVG "light" updates its virii database every day on my laptop.

I am basing my evalution on it's ability to catch the most current
virus, based upon the reviews by experts. You can still update your
antivirus database daily, and still not catch the latest variation
of viruses. The reviews i have read concerning AVG and Avast, (and
I have installed both of them), is they are good free programs but
"scored poorly when compared to Kaspersky and NOD32".

*Every* anti-virus program or suite has its own set of problems,
including Kaspersky, which I also have used from time to time. And I
didn't read *that* on the internet or in a magazine article "based
upon the reviews by experts."

Well, you are probably correct on this and all subjects, and it was
really silly of me to use the advice of those who specialize in the
field.

Reggie, you are a pretty bright fellow. I'm sure you can find other ways
to amuse yourself. Wouldn't you like to see a new and improved Harry
emerge out of all of this?

There is no "new and improved" Harry emerging. If the attacks aimed at
me and others here cease, then I will stop throwing them back. I will
admit to having no tolerance for those who toss spitballs and then hide
behind their anonymity, or those who criticize the boats, motors,
trailers, or gear of others, but aren't manly enough to put into play
what boats, motors, trailers, or gear they possess.

Know any posters like that? :}

I have used the free version for several years, and am completely
satisfied with it. As to a firewall, I have used Zone Alarm free version
also for several years. Both products serve my three networked home
computers well. Beats the devil out of the footprints of MacAfee,
Norton, et al, which I have also tried

And the price is right.

I have used AVG in the past. I seem to recall it affecting my boot speed
and or program load/run time. Sorry that's all I remember and
improvements may have been made to the software since. I have been using
Avast for the last couple of years and have no complaints about it. It
even found an attempted invasion a few months ago.

Likely *all* anti-vi programs will impact boot speed a little and
program load time a little or a lot. On my notebook, AVG impacted both
less than other anti-vi programs I tried, but of course AVG did impact
them some.

For what it's worth, the free Zone Alarm doesn't stack up very well these
days. It leaks.

Anonymity is a defense mechanism against any number of real and perceived

I will support any legitimate efforts to clean this place up.

I installed Zone Alarm when I went to cable internet. I was having a lot of

I am merely pointing out that it is not manly to attack others for
their, in this case, purchasing decisions, when you haven't the balls to
put your own similar decisions into play.

Let's say I posted that I had just purchased, oh, a Ford truck, and that
you posted, about 327 times, that you didn't think much of Ford trucks.
So, at some point you were asked, "So, what truck do you drive?" And you
responded, "Oh, I'm not going to tell you..."

That is not "manly" behavior.

Do you think it is?

FWIW, The Grisoft AVG Anti-virus was the lowest rated of the most recently
rated anti-virus products.

I've been using the McAfee suite for several years, and I've not, ever,
