An R22 is good, but an R44 is better. Make sure you investigate the status
of the rotors. There was a problem with some of the R22 composite rotors
that resulted in them being officially grounded until the rotors were
replaced. This was 2 or 3 years ago.

The guy we bought one of the Florida houses from had an R22 and he took me
up a few times. I didn't know it at the time, but he was still a student
pilot .... had not completed his flight school or received his ticket yet
and was not supposed to be carrying passengers .... but it was cool. His
R22 was grounded due to the rotor issue and he ended up selling it.

There was another very seasoned pilot that lived in the community that had
an R44 who also was a CFI. I took a few lessons with him, but I had a bit
of a hard time with the whole helicopter concept. He explained to me that
it is often somewhat difficult for someone who learned to fly fixed wing (I
had finished my private a couple of years earlier) to make the transition to
helicopters. I enjoyed flying in it though. We hired him for Eisboch
Jr's wedding. He and my older son (who was best man) made a grand and
surprise arrival at the wedding site in the R44 ..... swooping in at full
speed, 100 feet over the outdoor wedding party area, then pulling up
vertical and coming in for a landing sideways. I have a great video of it.

He also had me out over a cow pasture at 600 feet when I did my first
emergency "auto-rotation" landing. That's when I decided to stick with
fixed wing aircraft. Another time we flew down the ICW, about 5 feet
above the water, "attacking" a big sportsfish that was cruising along. The
look on the faces of the passengers in the cockpit of the boat as we came up
on them from the stern at 90 kts, then suddenly pulling up over them was
priceless. I had to go home and change my pants.

There's another famous poster here who flew with this guy in the R44. It's
a nice aircraft, as is the R22.

Good luck with the lessons and chopper purchase if you decide to go for it.
(Damn, now I have the itch to go rent a Cessna).

issue they had with the tail rotor, but apparently after the two
fixes, there has been nothing since. Pretty solid aircraft.

I haven't flown fixed wing in a long time. I seem to have an affinity
for flying 'copters for some odd reason - they suit me.

It's a blast in any case. To tell you the absolute truth, I'm a
little big for the R22 and was thinking of the R44, but this might be
a good incentive to drop 50 pounds. :)

I love the R22 - I could land it in the back yard easily - I could
land it on your driveway without any problems. :)

The only thing I can't quite justify is purchasing one outright. I
might take an hour share in one for a couple of years until I get a
feel for whether it makes sense to own one or not.

I was told that the Robinson 22 and 44 have the best safety record of all
private choppers.

A straight run drag race might still be interesting. I'd have to find
someone who knows how to drive the Porsche though. The factory issued
owner's manual lists 0-60 mph at under 4 seconds, but it assumes a driver
who knows what he/she is doing. Not me.

particular Ford year and have been searching off and on for one for several
years. *They are hard to find that are in good shape and reasonably priced.

Anyway, he has decided to sell it and had saved my telephone number from the
time we met.

I am going over to his house tomorrow with a check.

The '64 Galaxie 500 XL is arguably the nicest looking Galaxie of all time.
I still prefer the '63 however. I had a nice, '62 "Sunliner" convertible a
few years back and a plain-Jane '65 Ford "Custom" with the 300 ci straight
six for a while. Also had a '66 LTD ... maroon with black vinyl top.
Showing my age though. The '66 wasn't a "collector". It was our primary
transportation for a couple of years back in the early 70's.

Got my kid a motorcycle for Christmas, manual transmission, 4 speed..
These kids are amazing. They are so used to analog controls from X-Box
that after a couple of verbal lessons, backed up with a couple of
drawings on the workings of the machine, my kid got on and drove it
away. Probably stalled it 4 - 5 times since then, that's all. As soon
as the weather breaks, we are going to try the Blazer... I like to
teach my kids to drive young, my last one learned in my Jeep. I drove
up to the state park and down a dirt road to a dead end, put her in
the drivers seat and told her to back it out! Told her anyone could go
forward, that's easy. If you can back it out of here, you can take it
anywyere... Seriously, that was the first time she drove, or worked a
clutch... The scarey part was later that week when I took her out on
the highway. Getting on the ramp she looked over her shoulder and
turned did not think to keep the wheel straight. Up on two wheels, one
side, then the other, but we did not flip She pulled over, had a
cry, a cigarette, and we drove off again...


Buying a motorcycle for a kid....????
Please make sure he understands how dangerous they can be. A field trip to
a nearby trauma center might be in order.
