What OMC would a 1988 boat have.
OK, a local guy has a "boat" a pretty good sized cuddy, and his
outdrive is locked up. Well, He found out that it's got an OMC outdrive. He doesn't know which. Did OMC still use "Stringers" in 1988? or were they the "Cobra" drives? Not sure but could it also be the Volvo-Penta Hybrid? I haven't been over to see for myself, so my info is quite limited. |

Go look, if it's a stringer, then it's not worth fixing.

He can't describe it for crap. But I do know that he said that last year he "hit something",. So, lord knows what he's got and what damage is done.... |

I was told it had a "little rot".. I did not know that some 20 parts including the chine logs, keel and bottom, stringers, and a few transom parts had a "little rot". Good luck, I don't do restorations anymore, because of that one boat... |

I'd stay away from Stringers or Cobras. Cobras had a lot of problems in the
early years. OMC is out of business. I would question parts availability. And more importantly service availability. "Tim" wrote in message ... I know, that's why I'm glad it's not my boat. But there are several brand new (NOS?) parts on ebay, and used drives are available from parts boats. I'll still need to check it out. |

OMC is out of business. I would question parts availability. And more importantly service availability. Most parts are still available. Some are non existant. Service is still available.Drives can still be rebuilt. Manuals are available that cover all OMC drives from 65 to end of production. I know a few old gear heads that are wizards with OMC. I'm still using a 65 OMC drive that runs flawlessly. You DO have to know WHAT you're doing to work with them. |

Unless you *are* a gear head, very familiar with the OMC Stringer drives, they can be a nightmare. People that are knowledgeable in their repair and maintenance are becoming far and few between. Not a good choice for the average recreational boater. Eisboch |

Cobra outdrive from donor boat questions..
OK, so via word of mouth, I found a donor boat about 40 mi away thats an 18' celebrity. It can be had cheap . It was a really nice boat but due to letting it sit outside for the last 5 years, for all practical purposes ithe boat is trash., I'm not sure if it's a 3.0 or a v-6 GM. My friends is a 350 GM, and I've heard that the 3.0 outdrives were different than the V 6 and 8 model engines. with exception of gear ratio's, which I can see compensating for with different props. is there anything different between the Cobra outdrives on the little 4 cyl and the larger V's that you couldn't interchange with just a simple swap? Thanks! Tim |
