probably a 270 c.i. "Red Ram"

Probably, although I think I recall "Firedome or Fire(something) on the
valve covers. In any event, it was my first car after getting my license.
My parents decided it was a good kick around vehicle for me because the
valves were shot, the rings were worn and it struggled to get out of it's
own way. The compression was so low I could probably have jump started it
with a 9 volt transistor radio battery.

But, it ran.

My first was a '52 Studebaker that drank more oil than gas and generally
suffered from the same problems yours did.

But, it had a good heater!

Hey! I had one of those. It was a "Custom Royal Lancer". Mine was a
black/black/black convertible. Had the shift selector coming out of
the dash, and about half the weight of the car was the outrageous
chrome work on the front. It was a beaut. I don't remember for sure,
but I think the engine was called a super red ram rocket, or something
along those lines. It was a hemi, and hauled ass. It was a pretty
plush ride for those days.

Mine was also a "Custom Royal Lancer" but was a hardtop, not a convertible.
Looked like this, except for the color.
(it was cream top, dark blue hood and trunk and sky blue side panels)

And after rebuilding it for me, my father had it painted my mother's
favorite colors, "tangerine" on the bottom and "cream" on the top. It
looked like a creamsicle.

Poor Mr.& Mrs. Krause. They tried so hard and look what they ended up with.
Don't you do anything for yourself, Harriet?

I remember when you could buy a brand new Beetle with AM-FM radio for
what, about $1500?
