this nice weather got me thinking about planning for a river cruise
this summer. Just for example I was wondering about a trip down (or
accross) the Ohio, starting at say, Cave In rock IL (90 mi from home)
down to Cairo IL and back here's what the road trip looks like on
MapQuest, but you can see a good view of the river as well:

The river is pretty wide and deep enough for barge traffic, but I''d
like to know where the sand bars are, and to study distances between
ports etc. Any links to go to, or even if I need to buy a map is ok
with me.

You are right in that conditions can change from day-to-day on Rivers.
I've run the CT river in the morning and by mid-afternoon, it's all
different. *Of course the CT is a tidal flow river, but still.

I would suggest, being inland, of calling the local Corps of Engineers
office and see if they have charts of the river. *You might also want
to visit a local sports store like Bass Pro, Cabela's or even Wal-Mart
- they might have pre-printed charts with the major problem areas
highlighted.
