Harry,
I hate to tell you this, but I told you this months ago. I do agree
with you: Vista Sucks.

You really have summed up my feelings when you said:

It takes days and days to do that sort of thing, and even after that
there is no guarantee whatever problem you had will be resolved, or
that you won't unleash some new dragon.

The answer to this sort of horror lies with Microsoft. It simply is
not
doing the job it ought to be doing with these operating systems.
They're
too vulnerable, they are too hard to diagnose, their tech support
sucks
on these matters. It's not just with a beta like SP1 RC, it's
generally.

Harry Krause is obviously in your head causing you to obsess about him
24x7. Dark Side of the Moon?
JimH,

If you had checked with me before you purchased your laptop............

That would be the last thing I would think of doing.

As I have stated from the getgo....... the laptop is not mine but my
son's and he has not experienced any problems with it.

Am I also now in your head? Dark Side of the Moon.

As I said, a laptop running WinXP will run twice as fast as the same
laptop running Vista. I have no problems if that is what you like, but
don't fool yourself into thinking you don't take a big hit when you use
Vista.

sigh

JimH, do you do a lot of slouching, eye-rolling, and display other symptoms
of exasperation along with your heavy sighing? Many teenagers consider that
the height of "coolness".

Clean install on a new machine.

You know, I'm a windoze fan and have been since the very beginning, but
I am damned sick and tired of being told time and again, no matter the
version, "just do a clean install."

No offense to you. Really.

It takes days and days to do that sort of thing, and even after that
there is no guarantee whatever problem you had will be resolved, or that
you won't unleash some new dragon.

I'm no linux fan, but at least with linux you don't get the support you
didn't pay for, as it were. :}

You didn't say how you first got Vista on your machine. Do you have a new
PC? Did you do an upgrade? If you have tried updates and still have
problems with Vista crashing, sometimes it is better to do a clean install
and start over. You will spend less time in the long run by doing this.
Yes, it's a pain in the A$$, but it just might be the lesser of two evils.

Not what you want to hear but sometimes it is all you can do.

This is what I get:

http://tinyurl.com/2tujwt

Error code 0x800736B3

I installed all the "pre" files properly and downloaded SP1.

Bombs out.

Also bombs when I try the download via VISTA Windows upgrade.

Nothing seems to download.

Any help for this?

Thanks

My tirade got the attention I knew it would from MS. This was a "beta"
upgrade to VISTA and apparently I was getting an error code no one else
was. The only downside was that the beta upgrade would not install. Got
a nice email today, telling me not to worry about it because after
sending in some files to MS and some logs, the "team" had figured out
the problem and that it would be "fixed." There's more to the
explanation, but this particular SmithersDungHoleisn't the place for
rational adult discussion. If you are interested, I'll be glad to
forward the email to you.

Harry did you end up using Bill Y.'s advice?

I feel your pain because I had an issue that I couldn't solve and I finally
resorted to a new install. When I did the install, I knew exactly what was
going in the computer. Once I got the system to where I wanted, I use
Acronis to do a backup just in case something else crashed.

You said that your machine is new. If it's within a few months, maybe they
will take it back. I guess there is no easy answer when something doesn't
work as advertised. Very frustrating indeed. Maybe there is a way you can
get the company to exchange Vista and use XP. Just a suggestion.

I wish I had a dollar for every time my PC crashed. I need to use
Microsoft
products because I do software development and that pays the bills.

Reggie, he doesn't have to use anyones advice. If Harry doesn't know
it, it's not worth knowing. Add to that, that if he has a big problem,
he'll just bring it up to Bill Gates the next time he has him down on
his Zimmerman like lobster boat.
