Harry, unless I missed it somewhere, you never got around to telling us about the boats that you actually built *yourself*. I'm sure we could all learn something from you about lofting, wood selection and construction techniques. I'm sorry, Whine. I must missed the post in which you responded to this b.s. of yours: "No one in the 50s or 60s could afford to build a wooden boat bigger than 7 ft for $200, even using the cheapest materials. " As for the boats I built myself, I built a few dinghies and skiffs on my own, none larger than 12'. The lofting and wood selection was done by my father and his shop people, and I used the construction techniques they taught me. I had patterns, used the shop tools to cut the wood, and used mostly traditional methods to assemble the pieces. Stitch and glue was not a technique I ever saw used in the shop. All the boats had frames. I helped out on the construction and repair of larger boats. I vaguely recall helping out on some hull repairs on a Lyman runabout, and that it was a real bitch because the damned hull pieces were held together with rivets. What boats have *you* built yourself My brother and I built several small wood boats when we were in high school, one hydro, one sail boat. They both cost more than $200 even with our free labor. I have also rebuilt several sailboats ranging from 14 to 34 feet, and done some significant upgrade projects to other boats I've owned. |
