Hmmmm.... $250 - $50 in merchandise = $200.... How is that MORE than
$218 even with tax on the $250. (BTW.. I bought the same 200W from west...best deal going!!) West may be a little pricier on some items (Compared to the internet) but my boats would not float without them. I will pay for customer service and convenience because if we don't support our local stores they will go out of business then where do we go when we are ready to leave the dock and something breaks. BTW... I live in Fort Lauderdale where we have more marine competion than ANYWHERE in the USA... 7 West stores in Broward county alone along with at least 15 competitor stores and I still find west to be the least expensive over all and the most helpful (over all) Maybe it is just in SFL but most of the people in the store are actual boaters. We had a great Christmas Eve at my sisters house. Great pasta/sausage/meatball dinner. Gift exchange with the kids and then a "White Elephant" gift exchange with everyone. The entire family (all 18 of us) had a great time together. I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays as much as I am. ;-) Likewise. I got a pair of engraved Vaqueros in a presentation box. Was going to get a tomtom xls one, but West Marine had the Nuvi for $249 + a $50 gift certificate to the store. Played with it while waiting at the Mexican market for the Christmas Eve Tamales. Pretty cool. She'll love it, and it will save about $2000 on your next car purchase! -- John H Probably no savings on the next car. then I will inherit the GPS for the truck. Looking at a Saturn Vue Hybrid for her next car. I did a quick look and couldn't find the GPS as an accessory for the Vue. Does it come with one? When I bought the wife the Highlander, the 'Navigation System' was in the $2000 range. Her Garmin was in the $300 range, and she's very happy with it. -- John H You bought her the Highlander???? I thought she was a teacher...and capable of her own purchases? Does she have to give you her paycheque....do you dole out an allowance to her? It's a guy thing here in the USA. We get to buy the vehicles and the wife specifies everything else (except the boat). |

A fuel efficient "normal" car actually has an edge after you factor in the manufacturing impact of the hybrid's components. But it is the feel-good thing to do. You recently heard a "story". That about sums it up. I'm guessing the story you are referring to is "Dust to Dust: The Energy Costs of New Vehicles From Concept to Disposal". It's findings don't hold up. http://www.pacinst.org/topics/integr.../case_studies/ hummer_vs_prius.pdf Total enviromental cost is very high for hybrids and all electric. The Batteries are the major item on both electric and hybrids. Total electric is worse in they mostly moved the smog generating location to another place from the car. And the range is not great enough to be a single car for a family. The lead mining and smelting is very enviro negative. But the milage is great, the tax rebate will allow me to have Harry & loogie help pay for my car. Because the first grandbaby is due in April and daughter and SIL live in SoCal I figure we are going to do a lot of 350 mile each way road trips a year. Hybrids don't really save much if you do a lot of highway driving. wife also does a lot of round town driving and the Vue gets decent mileage. The hybrid is actually the Honda motor. |

If she didn't do that, there would be a freakin' fleet of center consoles sitting in the driveway. :) |

I look at it this way - the faster we use up fossil fuels, the faster something new will come along to replace it. From a historical perspective, it fits perfectly. As a fuel, yes, but what about all the other uses of petroleum, medicines, fertilizers, plastics, etc. Oil is a gift, and some would argue it's too important to be squandered as fuel. Good point. Although if we don't use up fossil fuels, how do we get to replicators? "Tea - Earl Grey - hot". I'm afraid of replicators..... Different replicators. |

The Garmin GPS is so much easier to use than the one installed in the $65K!!! SUV. I'll never buy that option again unless (as in this case) it was part of a package I wanted. I now have two GPS's in one vehicle but I only use the Garmin. Maybe the Germans will catch up one day but I still like the portability. You made the right move. Dan |
