A friend showed me this trick to measure a dog's smarts/trainability.
Don't know how good an indicator it is, but seems accurate in my
limited experience.
Take a biscuit and a bowl. Show the dog the biscuit, put it on the
floor and cover it with the inverted bowl before the dog snatches it
up.
When my friend showed me the trick with my oldest dog, the dog
wasn't fooled, and quickly knocked over the bowl to get the biscuit.
Good sign, and in fact I'd long ago found she'll learn just about
anything you try to teach her.

Sam would eat the bowl just to get to the biscuit.

My wife adopted another big dog named "Fudge". I call him Chewbacca.
Anyway, she has done a good job training him and he listens and obeys
every command.

I just let Sam be Sam. He has such a great temperament and personality
that I wouldn't want to change him at all.

My 18 month old Springer Spaniel would stomp his feet , look directly at
me
and then at the bowl while barking... demanding that I remove it so he
can
get the treat.
This would keep up until I was so irritated, I'd remove the bowl just to
shut him up.

You know what that's called right?

Whatever it is ...I blame the wife for spoiling him.
