What happens if it gets wet? salt water can rust and ruin the
mechanism.

Good site with all sorts of "survival" info, including a fairly long
section on boating ditch bags, life rafts, personal signaling GPS devices,
et cetera.
No time to read the cluttered mess. But, if condoms, nylons & chocolate
aren't on the list, it's almost worthless.

Ditch bag, not bitch bag. Sheesh.- Hide quoted text -

Compass, spare GPS/VHF handheld, spare batteries, SOLAS flares/smoke,
basic first aid kit, water purifying tablets, water proof matches,
candle, firestarter, two flashlights, survival blankets and a mirror.

That's a good start for back country survival but it's important to
note that you cannot desalinate water with purification tablets, and
solar stills have a bad reputation. Therefore I would add bottled
water to the kit and some sort of high energy food like granola bars.
For use on a liferaft you can delete the matches, candle and
firestarter unless you have a reasonable chance of reaching land.

Water is in the First Aid kit - enough for two people, two days along
with protien bars - enough for a couple of days.

You would probably laugh at the First Aid kit, but when I explain the
presence of some of the items, it all seems to make sense and people
say - I never thought of that. :)

That's how I have room for all the other stuff.
