My kid came in from DC last night, and her bf found me a book called
"How to Duild a Tin Canoe" by Rob White. I guess it's a life story,
not a set of plans though;)

Way back in the early eighties, I bought plans for a 16 foot 'Friendship
Sloop'. I got as far as fabricaring the keel before going out and buying a
new 17' Siren.
I love wood boats but I'm not prepared to do the upkeep.

I'm sure this has been posted before, but this fellow built himself a
beautiful boat, and his web pages detail the processes nicely:

If steel or alumium I can arrange for metal fab and welding.

Hmmm.... that gives me an idea.

Something occurred to me after we were talking the other night.

I wonder if there are plans out there for, say, 18' Novi type hull,
CC. Something like this only with a after of center outboard well.

http://www.bateau.com/proddetail.php?prod=PG20&cat=29

The second thing that occurred to me is that I have all that pine
under the addition (you've seen that mass of wood) - if I had that
resawn to 3/8" would that work as planking? Or built it as lap
strake?

I have access to all kinds of red and white oak for ribs and such.

I think I need to give you another call to discuss it.

If you are looking for a Long Range Cruiser (LRC), take a look at the
"Diesel Ducks) as well.

There's also a custom Buhler design for sale right now that

http://www.trawlersandtrawlering.com...dcomplete.html

If you want something a little more turnkey, the Norhavn's are well
proven:

In older, used boats, the Hatteras 58 LRC is a classic, very nice, and
very "shippy" looking:

The good ones don't stay on the market long.

There are some "designers" ou there who started about 10 years ago,
went to every site on the net, copied their plans to cad and then paid
folks to be guinea pigs and submit pictures of finished untried boats
so they could go "international".. I really hate those guys, in the
beginning they were even set up in sections. My plans were on one
page, Roberts on another, Bateau (doing the same thing back then) on
another. Then after enough complaints, some of them at least changed
their sites so the boats were no grouped by the designers the plans
were stolen from... humprh....... not mentioning any names here....

then again Don, dories are cool, but your statement is subject.

Probably so, Don, that is, as long as I'm not in it!

That's ok - I found a betterer one anyway on the Bateau site.

Some posters here must think the old-time whalers chased their prey in
trawlers.

Those dories were used fishing for cod, haddock etc all over the Maritimes
and Newfoundland.
