Over the summer my wife complained about our HP5550 printer
being out of ink, color & Black. I went to the local walmart to
pick up a couple new ink carts. HOLY CRAP Over $50.00
plus tax for both carts?? I notice next to the ink carts sits a ink
refill kit. I pick up the Black one and think "how hard can it be"?
Then I see they have a color one as well and thought, to hell with it
I've seen these things for years...Im GOING for it.

After placing both kits in my shopping cart, An acne faced kid sporting
a walmart apron asks "Do those things really work?" I said "I don't know
yet.." At the check out, the geeky checkout kid asks me the same question.

Well Im happy to report "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause"

Refilling both black/tri-color carts. took about 20 minutes being carefull
to not get any ink on our kitchen table. You need a steady hand but
as long as you don't squirt too much ink in, you're good.

The kit comes with cleaning pads for the heads which is handy.

Upon reinstalling the carts. I had to go through a rather lengthy
process to let the software know the carts were full again, taping
up certain connection points on the ink cart, rebooting, etc..

All told. I spent about 1 hour on this operation (I could probably do
it much quicker next time.). Its been a few months now and we're
printing away. Color looks as good as it ever did.

I have enough ink for several more refills too. At least 6 more on
the black.

How about color, those are the pricey ones. Do the kits have enough to
fill those several times?

Oh yea... The black refill would go 6-7 times. The color ones could refill prolly 3-4 times.

I'll never buy another ink cart. again.

I think I'll wear some sugical gloves next time.
The key is....don't put too much in

:-)

I should note that we have had problems with the refills we have tried
over the years, clogging and drying up on the heads among other
things. We use our printers for business and can not risk a shutdown,
so we just get raped and buy the new ones now...- Hide quoted text -

Me too.

If it takes an hour to screw around refilling the cartridge, I'd
rather do something that doesn't risk ruining a printer, a desk, etc.
If you do anything at all for a living these days you can make more
money in the time it would take to mess around (literally) with a
refill than you will spend on a new cartridge. I do think it's a good
idea to recycle the old ones, however. :-)

I't the old Polaroid camera business model. They could have afforded
to give away Polaroid cameras, considering that color pictures could
cost almost $1 apiece.

I tried some "Brand X" carts in my photo printer and was NOT pleased with
the color results. I'm back to Canon carts. Takes eight of 'em at about
$11 bucks each. After my experience with the non-Canon carts, I'm not
about to try refilling carts with non-Canon ink.

Just got back from Staples where I bought their brand 'black refill' for my
Canon i470D printer.
Got reasonable results from my last one and at $8.00, a couple buckss
cheaper than the Canon brand ink.
