Default Bam! Boats to be banned in 'Bama?

My digression, but to the noise point.
I used to be a Harley fan. Just because it was American.
I was out driving on an errand a couple days ago and a couple Harleys
were 1/8 to 1/4 mile ahead of me. This was for a few miles. We were
doing 35.
Anytime the Harleys weren't coasting, my wife and I had to yell at
each other to be heard.
On the way home we were doing 45, chatting in normal tones.
A Gold Wing flew past 3 feet away, accelerating nicely to about 60
as he passed us.
We saw it. Didn't hear anything.

I HAVE lived in Alabama (Huntsville) and FL and WY, and TX and spent
enough time in GA, CO, and CA to think I have lived there. Lake homes
in AL can be really nice because land is simply cheaper there than
many places. As far as living in shacks, I admire people who do
because mostly they do so out of choice, no mortgage and few
maintenance expenses means they can do as they please. This lake
really is not suitable for really fast boats and I assume they are
trying to keep out mega-houseboats that are all the rage right now.
Nothing like a bunch of drunk mostly nekkid rednecks in your quiet
cove to make you a believer in SOME restrictions.
A couple evenings ago, I was out with friends who kept referring to
"trailer trash" . Although I have never lived in a "trailer home", at
one point in my life I considered owners of such to be affluent. I
have dated quite a few women who lived in such although my wife
wouldnt EVER consider such housing. So, somehow, I consider "trailer
trash" to be a slur on "my people".

You sure it was a Gold Wing and not a Honda Civic? Same exhaust sound.
(With applogies to a certain Florida Jim)

The stock Harley exhaust is not all that loud. The problem is that most
newbie Harley owners immediately exchange the pipes for a set of illegal or
semi-legal aftermarket slip-ons. It's a ritual of sorts. Then there's the
screaming 2 stroke rice rockets that will rupture your ear drums.

I ride an Ultra Classic with stock pipes and it isn't loud at all.

Actually the Wing is quieter than a lot of cars. It's quite pleasant to be
tooling down a quiet country road and be able to hear the sounds of nature.
My wifes Honda ACE kind of sounds and feels like a stock Harley. It must
have killed the engineers to have to design those attributes into a Honda
engine. ;-{))

The stock Harley signature sound, is not objectionable at all. Once in a
while I hear a modified one that sounds pretty good too. If you idle em down
low enough, almost to a stall, you hear the "potato-potato" sound they are
famous for. I kind of like that.

Pretty sure. It had only 2 wheels, and was skinnier than a Civic.

Yeah, I know. And I'm still really a pushrod guy.
Harleys are still pushrod, aren't they?
They used to ticket the open pipers, but for some reason they
leave them alone now. Maybe because most of the riders are pushing 60
or 70 years old. Probably half-deaf.
My 22-year-old got a ticket when he put something similar to the old
glass packs on his ride. I swear. I told him to keep a low profile,
but he managed to turn a damn '93 Chevy Corsica into a cop-magnet with
all the tricking out he did on it. You'd think from looking at the
car it belongs on a trailer headed for Talladega.
Got another ticket for some goofy LEDS he put on the "custom" hood.
All this was legal, and he beat the tickets. He's a good driver, and
has less movers than I did at his age. But a cop-magnet is a cop
magnet. They'll make a U-turn and follow him waiting for any mistake
- unless they know him.
I ****ed him off by telling him with 2 more pounds of rice he'll have
a Civic. But it's actually all well-done, and I'm proud of his
efforts. I'm thinking about pushing/helping him into opening a
customizing shop. He's got too much talent to waste doing truck
chassis.
The rice screamer bikes are pretty rare around here. I don't think
they live long, because they not only make that terrible screaming
noise, but they're moving WAY fast.

I ride an Ultra Classic with stock pipes and it isn't loud at all.

Whenever I think about what bike I would have, that's about it.
But I lost all desire for a bike after I crashed a car doing 105mph.
There was nothing unmangled but the front seat and me.
A black eye was my only injury.
I saw the value of being wrapped in steel - and luck.
I can do the steel part.

Sounds like he has a calling, and for less than you would pay for
private college, you can give him a career and a passion.

Maybe. He's finishing the ASE certificates in his spare time,
and about reached "master" level. But I don't see his strength
on the diagnostic end. His artistry is in his hands and eyes.

It's an IQ test. Why do so many Harley owners behave like sheep?

You're right, the stock Harley's are not that loud. Just listen to any of
the police Harley's running around. The stock Harley rider's answer to the
straight, loud pipes is that they are 'safer', which is a crock of crap.
