3 rescued after boat sinks in Delaware River
None hurt; salvage effort to help in investigation of accident

Three people were rescued after a cabin cruiser struck a submerged
object in the Delaware River and sank in the area of Reedy Point,
officials said.

The 52-foot vessel Appollo, based at Summit North Marina, foundered
about 9:45 p.m. Sunday, and its crew set off flares to alert rescuers to
their location.

Firefighters from Port Penn, Delaware City and Lower Alloways Creek,
N.J., responded along with a Delaware State Police helicopter.

Assistant Delaware City Fire Chief Matt Netsch said marine units found
three people on an inflatable life raft just off Reedy Island and took
them to Augustine Beach. No one was injured.

The investigation was turned over to the Coast Guard and state marine
police.

Calls to the Coast Guard were not returned Monday.

Capt. Robert Hitchens of the state Department of Natural Resources and
Environmental Control marine police said salvagers from Sea-Tow were on
the scene Monday, attempting to salvage the Appollo.

Once the vessel is pulled out of the water, investigators will examine
the damage to determine what caused it to sink so quickly. The crew
members' names were not released Monday.
