Default livewell pump hanging up kenner 18v

On my Kenner18v the livewell pump seems to get a vapor lock or
something very often. I've heard this mentioned before. What's the
solution for this? A stronger pump? Not sure what's really
happening. A slug of water caught in line that makes it hard for the
pump to get rolling again or what? Do I need bigger diameter hoses?
The pickup screen is not clogged.

regards
Don

Usually this is caused by a "loop" in the hose trapping air between
the pump and the tank. The hose needs to have a steady rise from the
intake to the outflow into the tank. Also ensure that the pump intake
is "always" underwater and not exposed to turburlance while underway,
esp. at high speed. Without seeing your boat it's hard to pinpoint
the trouble, did the system EVER work right? Any recent changes? New
system? Follow the pump installation instructions?
Good fishing

tks Mike,

No it never has worked right. Seems to be worse in a salt water
situation and if anything it tends to work better when running at
speed. Nothing I can think of has changed recently although it seems
to have gotten worse. So its not the intake that's a problem.

So I agree with you that there is probably a loop somewhere where a
slug of water is trapped and the pumped water can't make it over that
loop. Occasionaly, you can here the water break thru as the pump revs
slow down and then, gurgle, water starts coming out. The hoses run
under the center console so its possible with vibration that they have
somehow moved causing this loop to be created that you are
suggesting.

I'll push around under there to see what things look like.

Other than this, this Kenner has really been a great boat. I enjoy it
more every time that I take it out.

tight lines!
Don
