question about swing keel
I recently purchased a 1980 Tanzer 22 sailboat with a swing keel.
When the boat is going downwind or sitting at anchor with the keel down, you can feel the keel rock from side to side. It makes sort of a BONK....BONK....BONK....BONK as it goes from side to side. My question is: is this normal? Is there too much play in the pivot point? You can feel (and hear) the sound as the keel moves from side to side. I'd hate for it to fall off while underway, might entirely ruin my weekend. Thanks for any replies. Dave BC, Canada |

I've never owned a Tanzer 22 but IIRC, it's not so much a swing keel as a centerboard that swings up inside a stubby fixed keel. Wouldn't be good to lose it overboard but wouldn't be the disaster that losing a keel would present. Anyhow, a swing keel on a Catalina 22 has a screw down clamp in the cabin on the side of the trunk that keeps it from "bonkin" back and forth. I'm not sure how you could accomplish that trick on a centerboard that's tucked inside a keel. I'm interested to hear from somebody that has one though. Rick |

The trailer I've got will only accomodate the keel in retracted position, but I've put out feelers at the yacht club to borrow a full keel-type trailor so I can inspect the whole mess when it's out of the water. I am expecting to find some sort of serviceable pivot, be it just a pin or some sort of bushing system. Hopefully inexpensively. Thanks Dave |

Looks like a pivot pin you can get to. http://ubu.ca/tanzer22/Musacenterboardafter.jpg .... and here's the home page that may be helpful. http://www.tanzer22.com/tpage.htm Rick |

He http://www.magma.ca/~tanzer22/manual.htm#T132 The section on the "Centerboard assembly" is exactly what you're looking for and it has a link (Figure 21) to a drawing with measurements. You might consider joining the association. Looks pretty helpful to me. Rick |

Looks quite straightforward to replace the pin with a piece of 1" SS rod. I'm not sure what they're talking about when they say it's "retained by wooden dowels" but a visual inspection should make it obvious. Dave |
