Long story short: Four adults and two children in a 16' Bayliner on the Ohio
River at 2AM Saturday in fog run into a barge. One adult and two children
dead.

http://www.wvgazette.com/section/News/2007062623
The boat's operator jumps off a bridge Monday in an unsuccessful suicide
attempt.

The boat was overloaded, I think. And note the sentence in the article
indicating the Bayliner sank.

Guns don't kill people- Bayliners do.

Maybe. The mistake was being out in the channel with reduced visibility IMO.
Better to risk running aground trying to stay to the bank than to tangle
with barge traffic.

This statement made when several paragraphs earlier it was noted that the
barge sounded its whistle and Fisher steered into it. Sounds like an 'anti
barge' agenda there somewhere, rather than an anti-stupidity agenda.

lets see:

2am, little kids on board instead of at home in bed.
16' bayliner with a bunch of people on board in the dark and the fog.
Driver hears a horn and turns into a barge.
Nobody wearing life vests.

How fast were they going?

Who says stupidity doesn't hurt.

Well, stupidity anyway. I liked this line in the story:

"The tragedy points out the dangers that barges can pose to recreational
boaters, Armstead said. “They’re silent killers. You can’t hear them.”"

This statement made when several paragraphs earlier it was noted that the

I think what Clyde was alluding to was this: Depending on the length of the
tow, the sound can be coming from a couple hundred yards away from the part
that's running over you.

1. The fact that it was a Bayliner is totally irrelevant to the
tragedy..........the end result would have been the same if it were any
other brand.
2. The parents are absolute idiots and should never have been allowed give
birth and take care of children.
3. The event was indeed tragic......one that could easily have been
prevented.

According to the news story, the boat sank. That is relevant.

That's right. They should have stayed where they were rather than try to
return home in dense fog without radar.
Secondly, children should always wear a PFD when on board and adults also in
dangerous conditions.
