Yo!! Nerds!!

Ok, friend of mine sent me an .avi this morning of a monster striper
he caught off of Martha's yesterday.

Since I upgraded Quicktime to Quicktime Pro and installed iTunes, I
can't open .avi files. The QT player will open, but it doesn't play
the video. I took another .avi with my cellphone camera and it won't
open or play that either - just a blank screen.

It also won't play in Windows Media. It will open, but the video
won't play. However I do get sound.

WTH? This all started with the upgrade and the new version of iTunes
- avi's used to play just fine and dandy in Windows. QT won't play
mov either.

The other issue is that all .jpgs now open in QT. I can't switch it
back to the Wiindows display.

Any ideas on why that happened?

And how to fix it?

Final comment - Microsoft isn't the Devil, it's Apple.

And before anybody says it, I tried the Set Programs and Access

right back to what it was.

For one, the avi codec sounds like it's hosed. You can either use the
System File Checker utility in Windows Start run cmd, enter,
sfc/scannow, enter. That will make sure all the Windows files are correct.

Or and Google "avi codecs" and you see any number of places to get an avi
codec.

John H suggested probably the easiest way to re-associate avi files with
Windows Media Player. Like a lot of things in Windows there are several ways
to reach the same end result.

Find the file in Windows Explorer, right click, choose 'Open With' , select
'Choose Program', select the program you want to open the file, then click
the little box that says to use it all the time.

Here's another way, from the help files:

To associate a file name extension with a file type
Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Folder Options
..
On the File Types tab, click New.
Type a new or existing file name extension, and then click Advanced.
In Associated File Type,
Type or select New to create a file type to associate with the file name
extension.
-or-

Type or select a different file type to associate with the extension.
Notes

When you type a file extension in the Create New Extension dialog box, the
Associated File Type list displays the file type that is associated with
that extension. To select New, scroll to the top of the list.
For information about how to make modifications to the file type, click
Related Topics.
To change the program that opens a file, on the File Types tab, under
Registered file types, click the file type, and then click Change.

Some of these rogye programs reassociate themselves with files, even
ones they can't run, every time they start. Quicktime is evil IMHO.
You can go blow it away and it still keeps coming back.

You're right. Some of them automatically switch file associations at
startup. With them, one must find the on/off button in the program's setup.
That can sometimes be a bitch, but the switches are usually there
somewhere.

Gregory Hall June 23rd 07 06:56 PM

It's simple. You need to re-do the file associations the newly installed
programs stole.

Open Window's Explorer. Drop down the tools menu. Select folder options.
Select the "file types" tab. Scroll down to AVI. Highlight it. It will
say under the details section Opens with: Yours probably says something
other than Windows Media player. Click the change button and associate
it with Windows Media Player or whatever program you andt it associated
with. Then click OK OK OK as many times as it takes to close all the
windows.

That should do it for you.

10-4 - anytime you want. You have my email address and we can do

I might suggest you get a Sea//Tow or BoatUS towing membership though

Don't worry about little things like that. Steve Jobs knows what's
best for your infidel WinDoze computer...

I hate Quicktime.

Every time I've installed it, something has gotten messed up.

I bought QT Pro as a quick avi editor - the damn computer hasn't work

We came in from offshore just south of Savannah at St Catherines Sound
and have been cruising north on the ICW last couple of days. This
enire stretch of coastline is fantastically scenic and a great area
for boating.

I really like that whole area. One of my son's friends Dad let me use
his Hydra-Sports CC for a couple of days in May - I ran around that
whole Charleston Harbor area and had a blast. Then we trailered down
to Beaufort/Paris Island area and he took me for a tour of that whole
area - Morgan's/Ladies Islands and other places.

I can't wait to get further down towards Savannah - I've heard the
inshore fishing is spectacular.

open or play that either - just a blank screen.

It also won't play in Windows Media. It will open, but the video

WTH? This all started with the upgrade and the new version of iTunes
- avi's used to play just fine and dandy in Windows. QT won't play

Find the file in Windows Explorer, right click, choose 'Open With' ,
select

click
the little box that says to use it all the time.

Went to the Apple store and the guy burned me a CD with the files. Manual
that comes with the Ipod is about 8 square inches with very little info.
Asked a young lady at the gym how to turn off the unit. She said the apple
store can help you a lot. She was about 18 and stated she did not
understand most of the features.

Now I feel much better. We have a lady from Belarus staying with us. She's
a chaperone for the 'Children of Chernobyl' program. Today she bought an
Ipod to take home to Belarus, one that holds 20 hours of music or video. We
offered to take her to the movies, but she's seen everything over there.
The CD's are available for about $0.50 each. The quality may not be the
best, but they're definitely cheap.

problem
knowing how to use it. Same goes with Itunes.

You guys need to stick to 8 tracks and boom boxes. ;-)

Apple snob.

Dinged up stainless steel prop snob.

Good point.

Doesn't excuse Apple though.

Nerd... :)

Stinky cigar snob.

I'd rather be a stinky cigar snob than a nerd.

And a Apple Nerd to boot.

Apple nerds live longer than stinky cigar snobs. ;-)

Hell - I got one of them teeny tiny iPods and I still don't
understand
the features.

And there aren't any on it - I'd hate to actually own one more
complicated. Took me a week to figure out how to operate iTunes
and
then it screwed up my computer.

F'in Apple.

That little scroll button always seems to get you to the wrong place.
F'n
Apple.

F'n Apple!

I have not yet had a problem with my Ipod 30G video nor have I had a
problem
knowing how to use it. Same goes with Itunes.

Apple snob.

8 tracks sucked also.

That's why you need to stick to them. ;-)

Saw they sucked from the getgo. Never did own an 8 track. Stayed with
Cassettes. But the phonograph that some cars had, was kewl.

I guarantee you, I will live longer than you will.
